Oilers’ Andrew Mangiapane, Alec Regula clear waivers

Andrew Mangiapane is staying in the Edmonton Oilers organization.

The forward cleared waivers Monday alongside teammate Alec Regula, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Elsewhere, the Minnesota Wild claimed Robby Fabbri from the St. Louis Blues, while Luke Kunin of the Florida Panthers and Guillaume Brisebois of the Vancouver Canucks also cleared.

Meanwhile, new on waivers Monday were Detroit Red Wings defenceman Erik Gustafsson, Seattle Kraken defenceman Gustav Olofsson and Wild forward Tyler Pitlick.

Mangiapane signed a two-year, $7.2 million deal with the Oilers on July 1 with the goal of providing offensive depth behind the likes of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

It hasn’t worked out. Mangiapane has just seven goals and seven assists in 52 games on the season along with a career-worst plus/minus of minus-19 while enduring multiple healthy scratches. The Toronto native is in his ninth NHL season, with three prior 20-goal campaigns to his name.

Still, general manager Stan Bowman said Monday the move was made for salary-cap reasons as opposed to performance.

The five-foot-10, 183-pound Mangiapane was a sixth-round draft pick (166th overall) of the Calgary Flames in the 2015 NHL draft. He has 257 career points (130 goals, 127 assists) across 550 games, having also played for Calgary and Washington.

Regula, also in his first season with the Oilers, has struggled with three assists and a minus-16 across 29 games. He recently spent time in the AHL on a conditioning stint.

Fabbri, 30, had just one goal and three assists in 15 games with the Blues.

Pitlick, 34, has two points — both goals — in 32 games for the Wild.

Gustafsson, 33, has appeared in just two Red Wings games this season without recording a point.

Olofsson, 31, has not skated in an NHL game for two seasons.

Kunin has appeared in 44 games with the Panthers, recording two goals and two assists.

Brisebois has not skated in a game with the Canucks this season.
