Last week at the NFL Scouting Combine, Jets general manager Darren Mougey indicated that the team would use either the franchise tag or the transition tag on running back Breece Hall if the two sides could not agree to a long-term contract before tomorrow’s deadline to use the tags.

We still have no deal struck, although SNY’s Connor Hughes indicates the two sides continue to negotiate.

The Jets are actively negotiating with Hall and hope to reach agreement on a contract near three years in length, per sources. General manager DarrenMougey plans to use the transition tag if the sides cannot finalize an extension, though that remains a fallback option that the team would prefer to avoid.

Using the transition tag instead of the franchise tag would strike me as a rather foolish decision. The transition tag would only save around $3 million over the franchise tag. It would also allow Hall to seek offers from other team and sign an offer sheet. The Jets would have the ability to match any offer sheet Hall signs to retain him. However, they would receive no compensation if they chose not to match and permitted Hall to leave.
