Inter Miami will take centre stage in Washington next week as their MLS Cup triumph brings them to the White House.
Lionel Messi and President Donald Trump sit at the centre of the attention, yet the Argentine forward’s attendance remains unconfirmed. The visit places added focus on the champions before they resume league play.
Inter Miami are scheduled to visit the White House on March 5 to recognise their 2025 MLS Cup success, with the event set just days before their meeting with D.C. United.
Messi’s availability remains unresolved ahead of Washington ceremony
Attention now turns to whether Lionel Messi will travel with the squad to Washington for the formal recognition.
Messi’s presence has not been publicly confirmed despite the invitation applying to the full Inter Miami roster, according to The Athletic.
“A representative of Lionel Messi did not respond when asked whether the Argentina international will join, but the trip has been scheduled ahead of the team’s game against D.C. United on Saturday, March 7. Inter Miami did not respond to a request for comment.”
Messi is not confirmed to attend the White House visit, leaving his involvement uncertain as preparations continue.
He previously received an invitation to the White House but did not attend the ceremony to collect the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Inter Miami continue MLS tradition with landmark Trump visit
White House receptions for title-winning teams remain a longstanding practice in American sport, although MLS clubs have appeared less frequently in recent seasons.
Inter Miami will become the first MLS side to visit President Donald Trump across his two terms in office.
The March 5 appearance places them among past MLS champions who have made the trip, including the Columbus Crew in 2024.
The first MLS team to attend was D.C. United in 1998, while the LA Galaxy’s 2012 visit featured current Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham.
Messi, 38, has never visited the White House, and his possible presence would mark a notable moment in the club’s short history.
