A new report suggests the Cleveland Browns may add another signal-caller to their crowded QB room via free agency, and he has a similar playing style to two-time MVP Lamar Jackson.
The Browns have a messy situation at quarterback heading into the 2026 NFL season. They used two draft picks on signal callers last April when they added Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Both will be in play for the starting job next season. They will also have Deshaun Watson back following two surgeries on his torn Achilles.
Yet, neither of the three options excites Cleveland fans based on what they saw from them during their opportunities to start over the last few seasons. However, Browns management is hoping that after hiring former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken to be their new head coach, he might be able to get more out of Gabriel, Sanders, or Watson in 2026.
It suggests the team will pass on adding a QB in the NFL Draft or free agency this offseason. Especially with both avenues not offering great options. However, in a Tuesday newsletter, The Athletic’s Jacob Robinson revealed a “sneaky fit” that the Browns could target next month.
Browns linked to free agent QB Malik Willis
“A sneaky fit: Green Bay Packers backup Malik Willis joining the Browns. He’d work with a young team and coach Todd Monken, who helped Lamar Jackson have the best passing season of his career in 2024,” the NFL analyst claimed. “Willis has the potential to be a Jackson-lite.”
The Tennessee Titans’ third-round pick in 2022 received opportunities to play during his first two years, but was a disappointment. However, over the last two seasons, he has created strong buzz for his work as a backup in Green Bay. In four appearances last season, he looked good and generated a lot of momentum for his jump into free agency next month.
While the QB options in free agency are very thin this year, the 26-year-old does offer an intriguing high-upside option that could be had at a reasonable rate. But the Browns would need to move on from one of their three QBs before seriously considering a pursuit of Willis.
