After two dominant wins over ranked opponents, No. 3 Maryland women’s lacrosse looks to continue its hot streak against a pair of unranked teams. The Terps have shot up the IWLCA ranking table after comfortable wins over No. 13 Syracuse and then-No. 12 Virginia. In both wins, Maryland was propelled by extensive offensive depth and newfound stability in goal.
The Terps begin their short road stretch in Washington, D.C. to face Georgetown on Wednesday at 7 p.m. They will then travel to Philadelphia to take on St. Joseph’s on Friday at 2 p.m. Both contests will stream on ESPN Plus.
Georgetown Hoyas (2-0, 0-0 Big East)
2025 record: 9-8, 4-2 Big East
Head coach Caitlyn Phipps enters her second year at the helm for Georgetown following 12 years of assistant coaching at Maryland. In her first year, the Terp alum led the Hoyas to their first winning record since 2020. Georgetown’s 2-0 start is their best in the last seven years as it looks to build on last year’s improvements.
Players to watch
Gracie Driggs, senior attacker, No. 2 – Driggs has started every game since 2024. She scored a team-leading 51 goals and had 123 draw controls last season. Her hat-trick-per-game average solidified her as the go-to option for the Hoyas on offense.
Anne McGovern, junior attacker, No. 9 — Though she was slotted into a distributor role last season, McGovern is off to a blazing pace this season with eight goals in two games. The attacker led all returning players with 29 assists in 2025, adding another dimension to Driggs’ firepower.
Strength
Shot volume. A big reason behind Georgetown’s recent lopsided victories has been its dominance inside the fan. The Hoyas average a Big East-leading 34.5 shots per game, as McGovern leads the pack with 7.5 a game on her own.
Weakness
Draw controls. The Hoyas have averaged 11 draw controls per game and were overpowered by Towson in the draw circle, 12-16. Georgetown will need to correct this glaring weakness when taking on a high-powered program.
Saint Joseph’s Hawks (1-1, 0-0 Atlantic 10)
2025 record: 11-6, 9-1 Atlantic 10
Maryland Athletics Hall of Famer and St. Joseph’s head coach Alex Kahoe enters her 12th season in command after finishing one game away from an Atlantic 10 title in 2025. The Hawks have reached the Atlantic 10 tournament in every season since 2015.
Players to watch
Alexa Capozzoli, senior attacker, No. 7 – Capozzoli ended 2025 with a team-leading 57 assists and 84 points as the Hawks’ primary set-up player. The 2025 Atlantic 10 second teamer has three goals on the season as she settles into a higher-scoring role.
Claire Fowler, sophomore defender, No. 25 – As a true freshman, Fowler landed on the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. The defender racked up 18 ground balls and caused 11 turnovers, and she already has four caused turnovers this year.
Strength
Turnovers. The Hawks have proven to be one of the least turnover-prone offenses in the Atlantic 10. St. Joseph’s averages just 10 turnovers a game due to its relaxed pace on offense.
Weakness
Shot percentage. At the same time, some of these drawn out possessions have a shockingly low success rate. The Hawks have posted a conference-worst .286 shot percentage this season and will likely face an even greater struggle against Maryland’s backline.
Three things to watch
1. Can Maryland hold its ground? With Monday’s latest IWLCA poll, the Terps shot up from sixth to third after a dominant win over ranked Virginia. This marks Maryland’s highest ranking since 2022; one it will look to hold on to through these nonconference contests.
2. New faces? Depth has been a huge point of emphasis for head coach Cathy Reese, and her players have picked up on that in a big way. It is very likely that Reese will look to give young, untested players more minutes against these relatively weaker opponents.
3. Minister of defense. JJ Suriano has taken leaps and bounds since her debut in 2025. The junior goalkeeper touts a .674 save percentage and looks to sustain her progression after being named National Defensive Player of the Week.
