Rangers Designate McCutchen for Assignment

Former NL MVP Andrew McCutchen was designated for assignment by the Texas Rangers on Wednesday after hitting .192 in 37 games with the club.

The 39-year-old outfielder, who joined the Rangers on a minor league contract in spring training, started only 16 games (9 as DH, 6 in outfield). McCutchen had two doubles, one home run, five RBIs, and 21 plate appearances as a pinch hitter - the most among MLB players this season.

The Rangers signed infielder Nicky Lopez to a major league contract as a replacement. McCutchen, a career .271 hitter with 333 homers over 18 seasons, has seven days to be traded, released, or outrighted to the minors. turconews.click
