Former Steelers DB Mike Wagner Dies at 76

Mike Wagner, the legendary Steelers safety who helped secure the franchise’s first two Super Bowl titles, died at 76.

Wagner was drafted by Pittsburgh in the 11th round of the 1971 NFL Draft and became a starter as a rookie. Over ten seasons he recorded 36 interceptions, earned two Pro Bowl selections, and was a key part of the Steel Curtain defense that won four Super Bowls. He intercepted Fran Tarkenton in Super Bowl IX and Dallas Cowboys’ Drew Pearson in Super Bowl X, turning the games in the Steelers’ favor.

The franchise announced his passing on Wednesday, noting he was 76. Steelers owner Art Rooney II praised Wagner as a “tremendous player” and “integral part of some of the most successful teams in Pittsburgh history.” No cause of death was released.
