As the Round of 32 wrapped up on Day 2, the Indian badminton contingent experienced mixed results at the iconic Istora Senayan at the Indonesia Open 2026.
Fresh off their Singapore Open title success, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty entered the Super 1000 event in Jakarta but had to pull out mid-match due to Satwik’s recurring shoulder injury.
After early exits for Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth on the opening day, HS Prannoy also faltered in the opening round on Day 2. However, it was Asian Championships silver medallist Ayush Shetty who kept India’s men’s singles challenge alive and progressed into the second round.
The towering Indian beat China’s world No. 15 Weng Hong Yang 8–21, 22–20, 21–15 in 66 minutes.
The proceedings began like a nightmare for the 20-year-old as Weng came out firing with deft cross-court smashes and aggressive net play, completely dismantling Shetty and taking the opening game in one-sided fashion.
With his back against the wall, Shetty completely flipped the script in the second game. With drift in his favour, he pushed for longer rallies and forced Weng into unforced errors, also capitalising on lifts using his long reach. At a crucial moment, Shetty showed nerves of steel to take the second game 22–20.
In the decider, the momentum swung entirely in the Indian’s favour. Shetty dictated the pace of the game from the start and mixed his drops with deep smashes, racing ahead to secure the thrilling encounter. He will face Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu in the pre-quarter-finals.
Apart from the young Shetty, the mixed doubles pair of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Gadde also progressed. They stunned Taiwan’s world No. 20 Yang Po Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang in straight games, winning 21–14, 21–14 in just 36 minutes. Next, they will face a stern challenge from France’s fourth-seeded pair Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue.
In another men’s singles match, veteran HS Prannoy fought hard against Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen, even taking the second game, but fell just short in the decider, losing 17–21, 21–16, 19–21.
Meanwhile, Unnati Hooda in the women’s singles lost against Japanese veteran Nozomi Okuhara in straight games, going down 15–21, 14–21.
