While Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have won the IPL five times each, it’s Kolkata Knight Riders, who have been ranked the most valuable franchise in India, in the inaugural Fanatic X Hurun India’s Most Valuable Sports Teams 2026 report released on Tuesday.

The report, according to Hurun India founder and chief researcher Anas Rahman Junaid, reflects how Indian sport has become “a serious asset class, not just a cultural footnote.”As per the report, KKR’s valuation ranges between Rs 19,200 crore to Rs 22,500 crore, placing it ahead of the Mumbai Indians (between Rs 18,400 crore and Rs 21,700 crore) and Chennai Super Kings (valued between Rs 18,400 and Rs 20,700 crore), placing them second and third respectively.

The 10 IPL franchises together are reportedly worth approximately Rs 1.63 lakh crore.

“The valuation is based on four main factors: Performance and Title Pedigree, Brand Value and Fan Engagement, Global Cricket, Portfolio Breadth and City Economic Dynamics,” Junaid told mid-day. The report also argues that a franchise’s worth is no longer defined solely by trophies. “Ten years ago the value of an IPL team wasn’t even equal to the value of third division American league or the UK second division. But the numbers today indicate where Indian sport is heading in terms of value” said Raghav Gupta, Founder and CEO, Fanatic Sports Pvt Ltd.

India’s pace ace Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the lone Test against Afghanistan (at New Chandigarh from June 6), and also from the three-ODI series against the same opposition, beginning on June 13 at Dharamsala, and his childhood coach Kishore Trivedi has backed the Ajit Agarkar-led national selection committee’s decision to give the hardworking pacer a break.

“Rest is absolutely necessary for Jasprit as his form has also not been the greatest across the last few days. This break was a must for him,” Trivedi told mid-day over the phone from Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

Bumrah, 32, who has 504 scalps in 236 internationals across all three formats, has managed just three wickets in 12 IPL games so far this season.

When asked about the possible reasons for Bumrah’s poor show, Trivedi said: “We have to consider the nature of the [flat] wickets [pitches]. Also, all the teams have become strong so every bowler has to work very hard because nowadays even if you bowl a good length ball, batsmen tend to go after it and hit a six. One match needs to go well and the form will come back. If Jasprit can get three or four wickets in a match, it will boost his morale and he will be back to form. He has not made any mistakes with his bowling. It’s just that when your performance is not good, you tend to overthink and that can affect things.”

Trivedi is confident rest will work wonders for his ward: “Jasprit will definitely bounce back after this rest. It will help him reset mentally too. BCCI have made the right call. Rest will help him get fitter and better for his next India assignment.”

Vidarbha’s left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey’s father Surendra was over the moon on Tuesday after his son earned his maiden Test call-up for the upcoming one-off match against Afghanistan (at New Chandigarh from June 6). Dubey, 23, will also be part of the Shubman Gill-led ODI squad for the three-match series, starting at Dharamsala on June 13.

“I’m struggling for words right now. It’s the best moment my son Harsh has given me. There is no joy bigger than this for our family,” Dubey Sr told mid-day over the phone from Nagpur on Tuesday.

“I used to play a lot of gully cricket and could only dream of playing at a higher level. But now my son will fulfill my dream of playing at the highest level. He will soon have India’s pride, a Test cap. There is nothing bigger than that for me. I’m going to the temple to offer thanks to the Almighty,” added Surendra. Dubey, 23, who got the nod ahead of the experienced Axar Patel, has taken 133 scalps in 27 first-class games and scored 1026 runs. He’s currently representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, having picked eight wickets in eight games.

The father-son duo spoke in the first half of Tuesday. “Harsh called me after boarding his flight [Chennai to Hyderabad], but was wasn’t sure about his selection. He said he’d call back in the evening. Now, I’m trying to call him, but his phone is constantly busy,” said Surendra.
