South Africa approach Pitso Mosimane for second stint as head coach

Johannesburg [South Africa], August 8 (ANI): South Africa has approached Pitso Mosimane about returning for a second spell as head coach, with veteran Hugo Broos set to leave the role.

South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan said Mosimane was the preferred choice, but added that “we still need to tie up some loose ends" before the appointment can be finalised. betsport24.es

“We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week," he added in a SAFA statement on Saturday, as per Reuters.

The 62-year-old Mosimane took charge of South Africa after the 2010 World Cup, succeeding Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira, whom he had worked under for three years.

However, Mosimane was sacked in mid-2012 following a disappointing start to South Africa’s 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Mosimane, who has won the African Champions League three times with South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and Egyptian club Al Ahly, also endured a costly error during South Africa’s final 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

He adopted a defensive approach at home against Sierra Leone, believing South Africa only needed a draw to qualify. They actually needed to win to secure their place in the tournament.

Mosimane and his players celebrated at the final whistle, only to discover that they had misunderstood the qualification permutations, with head-to-head results taking precedence over goal difference as the tiebreaker.

New Delhi [India], August 9 (ANI): Outer Delhi Warriors registered a sensational 25-run victory over Central Delhi Kings in the Delhi Premier League 2026 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, surviving a fierce late scare thanks to a disciplined bowling display led by Shivam Sharma and Navdeep Saini.

Batting first, Outer Delhi Warriors posted a massive total of 216/9 in their 20 overs, driven by an aggressive top-order knock from Yajas Sharma. The batter smashed 46 off just 25 balls, hitting four boundaries and three sixes to lay a strong foundation, according to a release.

Despite middle-over hiccups triggered by Jonty Sidhu (2/14) and Money Grewal (2/47), the Warriors finished with a flourish. Cameos from Shivam Sharma (24 off 10), Harsh Tyagi (24 off 10), and skipper Siddhant Sharma (19* off 5) propelled Outer Delhi Warriors past the 200-run barrier.

Chasing 217, Central Delhi Kings got off to a blistering start behind captain Yash Dhull, who blasted 47 off 23 balls (6 fours, 3 sixes). However, once Dhull was dismissed by Pratham Saluja, the Kings collapsed against regular breakthroughs by Shivam Sharma (3/37) and Harsh Tyagi (2/26), slumping to 141/8 by the 14th over.

With the game seemingly over, Jasvir Sehrawat played a miraculous counter-attacking knock to keep Central Delhi Kings alive. Sehrawat smashed 62 off just 33 balls, featuring six fours and four sixes. He anchored a thrilling 50-run partnership for the 9th wicket off only 20 balls with Divij Mehra (2* off 4), turning an impending blowout into a heart-stopping contest.

However, experience prevailed as speedster Navdeep Saini returned to break the dynamic stand, dismissing Sehrawat in the 18th over before sealing the game two balls later. Central Delhi Kings were bowled out for 191 in 17.2 overs, giving Outer Delhi Warriors a thrilling 25-run win. (ANI)

Devdutt Padikkal came out to bat twice on the second day of the three-day practice game at the Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC). The tall left-hander scored a brisk hundred against SLC XI, but most of the applause was reserved for the moment when Manav Suthar played an inside-out shot over the cover region against the turning delivery of Ramesh Mendis.
The beauty of that shot was how late Manav came out of the crease when the ball was released. That’s not an easy shot to play. Head coach Gautam Gambhir must have been pleased to see that from the young bowling all-rounder.

One of the team’s main objectives on the second day was to give the batters time in the middle. For that reason, the batters took turns in the practice nets while the match was going on. So India’s net practice and the practice game were happening in parallel.

Before coming out to bat in the middle, Manav was seen spending a long time honing his batting skills in the nets. During that session, he had a long discussion with captain Shubman Gill, who did not bat on the day but was active off the field, talking to Manav and Gurnoor Brar during their batting sessions.

When Manav came out to bat, the SLC XI spinners were right on top. It was a challenge for the youngster, playing his first red-ball game on Sri Lankan soil. Together with Ravindra Jadeja, Manav put on a fifty-plus partnership. He tackled the threat posed by the two off-spinners, Mendis and Keshara Nuwantha.
Manav showed that he knows the art of playing spin. Temperamentally strong, he followed an impressive first day with the ball with a brilliant day with the bat.

There’s no hiding the fact that the current team management prefers all-rounders. Manav showed his calibre with the ball on his first appearance, and now the signs he is showing with the bat are promising.
For the upcoming tour, there will be tough competition among the spinners in the squad. So far, Manav has looked by far the most impressive spinner. On a lifeless pitch, where he didn’t get any sort of turn or grip, he relied on variations in pace to take his wickets. In the field, he has also been very good.

Even though India will surely play a quality left-arm spinner in Jadeja, it will be very tough for them to leave Manav out. Not only does he bowl well against right-handers, but he is equally effective against left-handed batters. The same Padikkal, who was at his fluent best on Saturday, looked scratchy in his first net battle against Manav on Thursday.

India batter Jemimah Rodrigues has been ruled out of the ongoing Hundred after suffering a hamstring injury while playing for Southern Brave, putting her participation in the upcoming Women’s T20 Asia Cup in doubt.

Southern Brave confirmed on Saturday that Rodrigues has been replaced by Australian all-rounder Charlie Knott for the remainder of the tournament.

The 25-year-old has scored 143 runs in six innings for the Brave. The Women’s T20 Asia Cup begins on August 28, with India starting their campaign against Thailand on August 30.
