The Smash Rule Takes Effect on PMGO 2026 Grand Finals Day 2

Given that there are 6 more matches left, Day 2 would bring the eagerly awaited format of Smash Rule, which would totally transform the champion selection process.

Here is exactly how the Smash Rule will work in PMGO 2026 Finals:

  • Threshold: The Match Point Threshold is defined as the #1 team’s points at the end of Day 1 plus 10 points. As 4T ends day 1 with 82 points, the Match Point Threshold for Smash Rule is strictly set at 92 points.
  • Win condition: The team needs to achieve the 92-point threshold first. Being qualified, they should win their subsequent match with the WWCD to become the champion right away.
  • Backup: Should any qualifying team fail to score WWCD during all 6 left matches, the tournament proceeds to the normal overall point ranking.

India seize control through Gill, Rahul centuries on opening day

In England last summer, Shubman Gill thrived under the responsibility of the captaincy of the Test side, unleashing four centuries on his way to 754 runs in five Tests. In his first Test in the city of his cricketing birth, the classy right-hander produced a delectable fifth hundred in his last nine outings, on Day One of the one-off Test against Afghanistan on Saturday.

KL Rahul, now Gill’s deputy, has relished the role clarity that has stemmed from Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the five-day game. Now firmly entrenched in the opener’s slot, Rahul extended his purple patch with a fourth century in his last 10 Tests, putting Afghanistan to the sword.

Riding on the back of these twin tons and further half-centuries from Sai Sudharsan and the effervescent Rishabh Pant, India flexed their batting muscle as the visitors wilted in the searing heat, amassing an imposing 368-3. Afghanistan were game triers, but were punished for their largesse. Hashmatullah Shahidi chose not to review when Rahul, on 16, nicked Zia ur Rahman to the wicketkeeper and was ruled not out by umpire Sharfudduola, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz at slip dropped Sudharsan in debutant left-arm spinner Nangyal Kharoti’s first over when the batter had scored 20.

Afghanistan drew first blood at the stroke of the first drinks break as Yashasvi Jaiswal was strangled down leg off impressive pacer Mohammad Saleem. That proved to be a false dawn as Sudharsan was like a river in spate, uncorking a flurry of pleasing on-drives, while Rahul gradually discovered his timing on a slow track where the bounce was also occasionally uneven.

Sudharsan, in desperate search of a big score, threw his hand away with a maiden century in sight after a stand of 139, but Rahul and Gill’s tryst with three figures had a touch of inevitability to it.

After Rahul fell the ball after reaching his 12th century, Gill and Pant realised 121 with the promise of more to come, the left-hander treating the sparse crowd to three sixes in a single over from offie Abdul Malik.

PCB to sack Pakistan Test captain & coach after Bangladesh whitewash

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning to make sweeping changes to the Pakistan cricket team’s Test and coaching setup, according to Geo Super. After Pakistan lost 0-2 to Bangladesh away from home, the PCB is looking to sack Shan Masood as Pakistan’s Test captain and Sarfaraz Ahmed as the Test coach.

Pakistan’s next Test captain

Masood took over as skipper in December 2023, and Pakistan has struggled under him. During his tenure, Pakistan are 4-12 in Test cricket. He’s won just one series, 2-1 against England, and has been whitewashed at home by Australia, Bangladesh and South Africa. This humiliation away from home seems to be the final pin in the coffin.

It’s reported that Masood has requested to extend his run for the next 2 Test series, the West Indies and England, both away from home. It’s yet to be seen whether PCB will accept this proposition. If Masood is sacked, Salman Ali Agha, Pakistan’s T20I captain, will take over as skipper.

New head coach & director of cricket

Sarfaraz was appointed Pakistan’s Test coach in April, and his first assignment was the Bangladesh away series. Unfortunately, that might be all for him. Sarfaraz is expected to continue as the director of the Pakistan Shaheens and the Under-19 team. Former Pakistan captain and their highest run-scorer in Test cricket, Younis Khan, is expected to replace Sarfaraz.

Mohammed Hafeez, who has served as team director and interim coach before, will take over as the director of international cricket. Both Younis and Hafeez will also join the selection committee alongside Sarfaraz, Aaqib Javed, Misbah-ul-Haq, and Asad Shafiq.

Asad will continue serving as the Test batting coach, Umar Gul as the bowling coach, and Shane McDermott as the fielding coach. Pakistan will travel to Trinidad for a 2-match Test series against the West Indies in mid-July and depart for England for a 3-match Test series in August.
