Shams Mulani: A strong Duleep Trophy can help me get into India ‘A’ team

Maharashtra batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad was named West Zone captain with Mumbai’s left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Shams Mulani, his deputy, as the 15-member squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy was announced by the selection committee, chaired by Mumbai chief selector Rajesh Pawar, on Monday.

West Zone will play North Zone in the four-day quarter-final, beginning on August 23 in Bengaluru.

The team has as many as six Mumbai boys including Shardul Thakur, Sarfaraz Khan, Tushar Deshpande, Tanush Kotian and Musheer Khan along with Maharashtra opener Prithiv Shaw.

Mumbai chief selector Rajesh Pawar

“This West Zone team is a balanced one with good all-rounders. We preferred Ruturaj as captain as he’s also leading India ‘A’. Shams is an experienced player and that’s why we appointed him as vice-captain. Prithvi has scored 500-plus runs last season, so deserves his place,” Pawar told mid-day.

Shams Mulani, 29, who has claimed 265 scalps and scored 2523 runs in 58 first-class games, is hoping to excel as he takes on additional responsibility.

“This is an important domestic season for me. Quite a few new players have been brought into the Indian team, which shows that they [selectors] are keen on fresh talent. If I can perform well, as I’ve been doing over the years, and maybe push harder, I could get into the India ‘A’ team and better still, the India team too. This is a crucial juncture. I’m at an age where I have to give it my all, maybe one last big push and a good performance at this Duleep Trophy will help,” said Mulani.

Global Chess League marks World Chess Day with Road2GCL, inviting world to board ahead of Season 4

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 21 (ANI): On the occasion of World Chess Day on Monday, the Global Chess League (GCL) announced the return of Road2GCL, its community engagement initiative leading up to Season 4 in Bengaluru from September 3-14.

Rolling out in phases over the coming weeks, the initiative will bring together players, clubs, schools, creators and chess enthusiasts through competitions, community events and creator collaborations, extending the league experience beyond the tournament itself, according to a press release from GCL.

At the heart of the initiative is the belief that the journey to the Global Chess League should be as exciting as the tournament itself. Through a series of initiatives in the lead-up to Season 4, it aims to create meaningful opportunities for players, clubs, schools, creators and fans to engage with the game and become part of the league’s growing community.

Leading the initiative is Road2GCL Contenders, a competition that will provide aspiring players with a pathway to compete against Global Chess League stars through a multi-stage qualification process culminating in a special showdown.

The inaugural edition saw Jose Martinez (Open), WGM Mai Narva (Women’s) and IM Faustino Oro (Under-21) emerge as champions in their respective categories, with this year’s competition set to once again spotlight emerging talent from across the chess community.

Commenting on the launch, Gourav Rakshit, Commissioner, Global Chess League, said, “The Global Chess League was created to reimagine how chess is experienced, not just during the tournament, but throughout the season. Road2GCL reflects that vision by creating opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels to engage with the game, connect with the wider chess community and become part of the journey to Season 4. As the sport continues to grow, initiatives like these help make chess more accessible, participative and culturally relevant."

Season 4, to be held in Bengaluru from September 3-14, will once again bring together 36 of the world’s leading Grandmasters across six franchises, including reigning World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, who returns to the Global Chess League and will compete in India for the first time.

The season will also mark the much-anticipated league debut of reigning FIDE Women’s World Cup champion Divya Deshmukh, adding another exciting dimension to one of the strongest player fields assembled in franchise chess.

Road2GCL will also feature Shining Stars, bringing community-led chess activities to clubs and educational institutions, alongside Road2GCL Creators, a creator-led programme designed to introduce new audiences to the journey towards Season 4.

Since its launch, the Global Chess League has introduced innovations including a mixed-team franchise format, the unique icon board and simultaneous team battles featuring many of the world’s leading Grandmasters. Road2GCL extends that philosophy beyond the tournament itself, giving players and fans new ways to be part of the league before the opening move in Bengaluru. (ANI)

Sakshi Chaudhary to represent India at Commonwealth Games 51 Kgs women’s boxing category

New Delhi [India], July 21 (ANI): Commonwealth Games 2026 are all set to commence in less than a week in Scotland’s Glasgow, and the entire country is rooting for boxer Sakshi Chaudhary, who is an official entry for India in the 51 Kgs women’s boxing category.

Facing all sorts of odds, losing 3 kgs in three weeks, defeating World Champion boxers like Nikhat Zareen and Minakshi Hooda, Sakshi has proved her prowess time and again. Best suited for the game, showing her winning spirit and tactful fighting, according to a press release from SAI Media.

She is not new to creating history, as she is also the first Indian female to secure Gold in the World Boxing Cup, 2025, Astana.

Coming from a humble background and the daughter of a farmer, along with being a boxer, Sakshi also serves the Indian army. Currently, she is preparing for her match in Scotland. Rigorous practise, focused attention and manifesting the gold.

Speaking about Commonwealth Games, Sakshi said, “Participating in the Commonwealth Games has always been my dream, and I have been working on this for a long time. Finally representing Indian in the 51 Kgs boxing category feels surreal. Even when I got an injury, I was determined and never gave up. I recovered and kept training myself. Reducing weight seemed like another task, but I remembered what my father always taught me: to never give up and push yourself to the best of your potential. Right now, I’m busy training, and my only aim is to give my best shot and get that gold for India. I’m also taking the right amount of rest, a proper diet and staying mentally strong."

Sakshi is a two-time Gold medalist at the World Youth Championships (2017-2018), a gold medalist at the World Junior Women’s Championships (2015) and a medalist at the Asian Boxing Championships (2021).

She has been training since the tender age of 12 years and is surely right there to make India proud at the Commonwealth 2026, followed by the Asian Games 2026.

Sakshi is emerging as one of India’s most promising boxing talents, steadily paving her way towards the Los Angeles Olympics 2026. (ANI)
