French Open: Mensik seals first-ever Grand Slam semifinal; Zverev beats Jodar

Paris [France], June 3 (ANI): Jakub Mensik sealed his first-ever major semifinal spot, beating teen sensation Joao Fonseca in the quarterfinal of the French Open on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old Mensik overcame 19-year-old Fonseca 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(3). The clash between two of tennis’s most exciting young talents saw Mensik absorbing and giving back to Fonseca’s firepower, and he became the first man born after 2004 or later to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam in a match that lasted two hours and 33 minutes.

Both stars were competing in their first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinals, and it was Mensik who rose to the occasion, becoming the youngest Czech player to reach the semifinal of a Grand Slam.

“We started a little bit nervous, then at the end of the match, there were some incredible shots," Mensik said in his on-court interview as per ATP’s official website. “I am super happy that I came back. In the third set, I was a couple of breaks down, so I am happy I managed to stay focused and keep fighting until the end," he added.

After winning the youngest French Open quarterfinal since 20-year-old Rafael Nadal defeated 19-year-old Novak Djokovic in 2006, Mensik’s semifinal challenge will be the second seed and 2024 French Open finalist Alexander Zverev.

On the other hand, Zverev outclassed another rising young talent, beating Rafael Jodar 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-3 on Tuesday. Zverev, who had dropped just one set in his five matches, rallied from being 2-5 down in the opening set and was largely dominant in a two-hour, 17-minute clash.

“It was difficult," Zverev said in his on-court interview. “He had perfect rhythm in the first set and I did not. My balls were very short, and I was very defensive. The conditions [under the roof] were completely different. The string tension was different, the way the ball reacted off the ground was different. The ball was not bouncing as high, so heavy topspin was not really beneficial, and I had to flatten my shots out a little bit more."

“He was playing amazing and outplayed me in the beginning of the first set, but I managed to come back, and he played a little bit of a nervous game when he served for it. Then I took my chances well, and after that it was a good match for me," he signed off. (ANI)

Ahead of the Test match, the "Men in Blue" were seen sweating it out during the net session. The official social media handle of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a video with a caption, "#TeamIndia hits the nets as the red ball grind gets underway ahead of the #INDvAFG Test".

After concluding with the one-off Test match, Team India will engage in the three-match ODI series against the Afghans. The first match of the three-match ODI series will be played on June 14 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. The second match will be held on June 17 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium B Ground in Lucknow, and the third match on June 20 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Recently, former Team India cricketer Sairaj Bahutule was appointed as the spin bowling coach of the men`s national cricket team. He has already joined the squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan.

He expressed happiness over his appointment by saying, "It is a tremendous honour to be appointed as the Spin Bowling Coach of the Indian Men`s Cricket Team. Representing India as a player was a matter of immense pride, and the opportunity to contribute to Indian Cricket once again in a coaching capacity is deeply special. I look forward to working with the players and supporting the team`s pursuit of excellence across formats".

T20 Mumbai League: Hardik Tamore’s 67 helps Panthers maul Knights

In a match between the winners of the first two editions of the T20 Mumbai League, the 2019 victors North Mumbai Panthers (NMP) prevailed over Triumph Knights Mumbai North East (TKMNE), triumphant in the inaugural edition in 2018, by 21 runs on Tuesday.

Riding on opener Hardik Tamore’s 67 (off 43 balls, 9x4s, 2x6s) and vital contributions by Ayush Vartak (39 off 21, 2x4s, 3x6s) and Tanush Kotian (30 not out off 15 balls, 1x4s, 2x6s), NMP reached 209-5 after being sent in to bat.

Vartak said he followed the advice given by MS Dhoni at the Chennai Super Kings trials earlier this year. “Dhoni told me that I should stay calm as I was a finisher and take the game till the last ball,” Vartak said after the match.

Vartak, 21, who has been knocking on the Mumbai Ranji team’s doors for some time, isn’t thinking too far ahead and wants to stay in the present. “Winning the first game is always helpful. It gives us momentum,” he said.

TKMNE were restricted to 188-8 with Nutan Goel scoring a fighting 93 (off 56 balls, 9x4s, 5x6s).

For TKMNE to notch up their first points in this season, they needed their captain Suryakumar Yadav to shine, but, as was his woeful form in the just-concluded IPL, he could not get going.

Suryakumar played his trademark sweep and was caught at deep backward square-leg for 19 off left-arm spinner Rahul Sawant in the seventh over.

Brief scores
NMP 209-5 in 20 overs (H Tamore 67, A Vartak 39; S DSouza 2-23) beat TKMNE 188-8 in 20 overs (NK Goel 93; M Avasthi 2-32, R Sawant 2-34, H Tanna 2-44) by 21 runs

`Opportunity to contribute to Indian cricket is deeply special`: Sairaj Bahutule

Former India leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule was on Tuesday appointed as the spin bowling coach of the men`s national team, having worked in the India U-19 and India A set-up earlier. Bahutule, who represented India in two Tests and eight ODIs, was seen in the Punjab Kings jersey in the recently concluded IPL.

"The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Sairaj Bahutule as the Spin Bowling Coach of the Indian Cricket Team (Senior Men)," the BCCI said in a statement. A distinguished performer on the domestic circuit, the 53-year-old claimed 630 wickets and tallied 6,176 runs in first-class cricket that spanned nearly two decades.

Following his retirement, Bahutule built an impressive coaching resume, serving as head coach of Vidarbha, Kerala, Gujarat and Bengal. He also worked as spin-bowling coach with IPL franchises Rajasthan Royals and most recently Punjab Kings and was associated with the BCCI`s National Cricket Academy, now known as the Centre of Excellence, between 2021 and 2024. The former Mumbai stalwart also played a key role in India`s player development pathway.

He served as bowling coach of India`s victorious ICC Under-19 World Cup team in 2022 and was part of the support staff during the 2024 edition of the tournament. Bahutule has additionally worked with India A and the senior men`s team as a specialist bowling coach on multiple assignments.

"It is a tremendous honour to be appointed as the Spin Bowling Coach of the Indian Men`s Cricket Team. Representing India as a player was a matter of immense pride, and the opportunity to contribute to Indian cricket once again in a coaching capacity is deeply special," Bahutule said in the statement issued by the Board.

"I look forward to working with the players and supporting the team`s pursuit of excellence across formats," he added. His first assignment with the Indian team will be the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur beginning on June 6. He would be working with rookies like Manav Suthar and Harsh Dubey over the course of the Test match.
