Sai Sudharsan holds on to Orange Cap

Last year’s Orange Cap winner Sai Sudharsan from Gujarat Titans held on to his Orange Cap with 554 runs in 13 matches at a strike-rate of 157.83 with 1 century and 6 fifties. Rahul now has 533 runs in 13 matches at a strike-rate of 171.93 with 1 century and 4 fifties.

RR opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is in 6th place behind SRH opener Heinrich Klaasen with 486 runs in 12 matches at a strike-rate of 234.78 with 1 century and 2 fifties. While Klaasen has 508 runs in 5 matches at a strike-rate of 153.93 with 5 fifties.

The former South African batter will look to add to his runs tally with when he face Chennai Super Kings in match no. 63 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium at Chepauk on Monday.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar extends lead in Purple Cap race

RCB pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar extended his lead in the wicket-taker’s list over GT’s Kagiso Rabada with a three-wicket haul against PBKS in Dharamshala on Sunday. Bhuvneshwar now has 24 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 16.37.

South African pacer Rabada remains in second place with 21 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 21.95. CSK’s Anshul Kamboj can move up in the Purple Cap race when he faces SRH on Monday. Kamboj is currently in third place with 19 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 22.52.

RR pacer Jofra Archer remains in 4th spot with 17 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 23.52.

The IPL example

The IPL, which is currently in its 19th year, was conceptualised in London, with Lalit Modi actively engaging with the IMG top brass. Not one among them was Indian. While the BCCI now manages it by itself, a lot of the work continues to be outsourced.

Coming to the franchises, the trend now is to recruit former army personnel to take up the top job as CEO. This is because discipline is ingrained in them, and the assumption is that they will be able to do a good job of running the team. Be it Arvinder Singh in Gujarat or Satish Menon in Punjab, this is now a trend in India. Except for Venky Mysore, who comes from an established corporate background, few CEOs or senior management personnel come from the home-grown sports domain. A quality sports education programme will open up this entire ecosystem to aspiring talent, and they can not only work in administration but also deep-dive into sponsorship and marketing, digital strategy and content, and multiple other domains.

Media too is a largely untapped domain. At the moment, there is hardly any programme that touches upon sport and media management, and the crop that we get in the sports media domain is largely low-brow, comprising people who haven’t really made it in the so-called more attractive areas of work. With the explosion of sports leagues, this is a huge anomaly. Trained media managers are a necessity, not just in India but globally as well. Every sports team needs trained managers to handle multiple aspects of their work, and the gap is significant.

Commonwealth Games 2030

India has already won the rights to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Once the euphoria over winning the bid dies down, we will realise that the hosting rights are a huge opportunity.

What we don’t do in India is start work in advance. Things are still left to the last moment, and that’s when the narrative turns negative. If professionals are engaged in working on the legacy of the Games, on issues of sustainability and urban integration, there is reason to believe that the masses too can be brought within the fold of the mega event. To engage the masses and work across every domain associated with the Games, we need young sports academics coming up the ranks. There isn’t a programme that caters to this growing demand, and that’s where the collaboration with Adamas University can stand out.

There is a continuing disconnect in India between academics and practice. We in the sports media do not speak to academics, and vice versa. And yet, students need both. This disconnect, which doesn’t exist in the West, has been one of the biggest challenges for us as a nation. The partnership with Adamas University aims to address it, and I am convinced it can.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) batting coach Vikram Rathour said that Mitchell Starc`s 3-wicket over turned the match in favour of the Delhi Capitals, as RR went on to lose by 5 wickets.

With Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag on the crease in the 15th over, RR were cruising at 162/2; however, Starc dismissed captain Riyan, an in-form Donovan Ferreira, and Ravi Singh to turn the tide of the match. Eventually, RR ended up scoring just 193 runs, when 220-230 looked on the cards against DC.

"We were 20 runs short. We were 160/2 and should have got to 220-230. Losing three wickets in one over does not help. We could have been smarter with our choices in that over. We can make mistakes every game, and the idea is to learn from them and I hope, they will take different options in the next game. That over (of Starc) changed the game for us." Rathour said.

RR captain Parag decided to give the ball to Ferreira in the 18th over with DC needing 35 runs to win. That decision backfired as Fereira conceded 16 runs in the over. On the skipper`s decision, Rathour said a captain has to back his gut feeling.

"It is the captain who makes decisions. He is backing his gut feel. Our option was to bring six bowlers. But when we lost wickets quickly, we picked Dasun Shanaka as an impact sub. Otherwise, we could have picked up a bowler as an Impact Player. There are some plans discussed with the analyst and coach, but out there on the pitch, it is the captain who takes the ball," he said.

On their star opener, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi`s perceived weakness against slower, change-of-pace balls, Vikram said that "nobody is perfect in this world".

"Everyone will have some weakness. I do not think Vaibhav has a weakness against slower balls. On such a wicket where the ball is gripping, a change of pace is good against any batter, not just Vaibhav," he said.

"Enough has been said about his ability, and he provided us with a great start. I hope he converts one of these innings and goes deep. It is not too far with the way he is batting," he added.

I believe as a centrally contracted player of the BCCI, his fitness is paramount and the BCCI medical team could intervene. Jain might be asked as to what was the input from the KKR medical team,” a BCCI official told PTI.

With the playoffs qualification at stake, Sunrisers Hyderabad will look to rise above their batting inconsistencies against an equally desperate five-time champions Chennai Super Kings in their IPL match here on Monday. Placed third in the points table with 14 points in 12 matches, SRH (NRR 0.331) need to win both their remaining two group stage games to avoid late hiccups in the journey towards the knockouts. Even if they lose one of these two matches, SRH could still finish in the final four but the 2016 winners will need both Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals falter in at least one of their remaining two games.

However, SRH`s wobbly run does present the Pat Cummins-led side to put together a unified show especially at the business end of the tournament where they seem to have stuttered, losing two of their last three fixtures. In their last outing against Gujarat Titans, SRH looked in control having restricted them to 168 for five on a tricky wicket but fell apart for a mere 86 against high quality pace bowling. Before that, SRH had extended Punjab Kings` losing streak with a 33-run victory in a high-scoring game but it came after Kolkata Knight Riders had hammered them by seven wickets.

Meanwhile, the road ahead for CSK is not easy either even as they stand with a chance to finish with 16 points, but for that they will have to win their remaining two matches. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side had slipped to the sixth spot following their loss to Lucknow Super Giants in their last outing, and they currently have 12 points from as many matches. Even on Net Run Rate, CSK are behind in the race with a tally of 0.027 compared to RR (0.082) - who have three matches left - and PBKS (13 points, NRR 0.355) are also in the fray.

But CSK can still fancy their chances given the gumption their players and the support staff have shown while facing innumerable obstacles, including injuries to multiple key players. The current bunch looks far different from the resources CSK had entered the IPL with, yet they continue to fight hard with a couple of new signings in the form of Macneil Noronha and Kuldip Yadav. Kartik Sharma`s emergence as a dependable middle-order batter along with Urvil Patel`s explosiveness has added to the firepower that CSK have at the top in Sanju Samson. But bowling will remain a concern, especially after the last game in which a century opening stand from LSG batters had defied the hosts.
