The tie opened with a high-stakes encounter between double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and World No. 2 Wang Zhiyi, which saw the Indian going down 16-21, 21-19, 19-21 in a closely contested battle.

The proceedings saw the Indian trailing 4-7 in the initial phase. Thereafter, Sindhu showed sublime footwork, reeling off five straight points to lead 11-9 at the interval. She extended the lead to 14-10, but Wang clawed back with her deceptive strokeplay and sharp net control, capitalising on unforced errors to claim the first game.

Sindhu came out aggressively in the second game, unleashing a series of deep smashes and racing to a 9-4 lead. However, Wang mixed her deceptive front-court play with cross-court smashes, drawing level at 16-16. The contest remained neck and neck after that, but the Indian held her nerve, earning two game points and closing the game with a powerful smash, forcing the World No. 2 into the decider.

In the decider, Sindhu showed better control in the early stage and clawed her way to a 9-3 lead. She appeared to have the match firmly in her grasp, leading 18-12, but a late surge from Wang saw her reel off seven consecutive points to snatch the 78-minute marathon from the Indian.

In the next tie, the women’s doubles pair of Priya Konjengabam and Shruti Mishra found no room for recovery against the World No. 1 pair of Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning, as the Chinese duo dominated the entire match and handed the Indians an 11-21, 8-21 defeat in just 34 minutes.

With the momentum firmly with the favourites, former World No. 1 Chen Yufei tripled the lead by defeating Isharani Baruah in straight games in the second women’s singles tie, winning 22-20, 21-13.

In the last two fixtures, Indian shuttlers had to play dead rubbers for mere formalities. However, the young shuttlers showed spirited resistance.

Facing the Chinese duo of Luo Xumin and Zhang Shuxian, Tanisha Crasto and Kavipriya Selvam delivered a gritty performance in their doubles match. The Indian pair pushed the contest into a decider before falling 21-10, 12-21, 19-21.

Young Devika Sihag, Thailand Masters 2026 champion, took a game off Xu Wenjing but ultimately lost 21-19, 17-21, 10-21 in three games.

India finished the group stage in third place and failed to progress to the quarterfinals, with one win and two losses.

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], April 28 (ANI): Defending champion East Bengal FC extended their lead at the top with a 3-1 win against Sribhumi FC in its Indian Women’s League (IWL) 2025-26 match at the East Bengal Ground on Monday.

Fazila Ikwaput’s hat-trick secured three points, taking the Moshal Girls to 21 points from seven matches. The Ugandan striker took her IWL goals tally to 54, overtaking Ngangom Bala Devi, with 51 goals, to become the competition’s second-highest scorer behind Sabitra Bhandari (60). Rimpa Haldar scored Sribhumi’s lone goal.

East Bengal dominated from the outset with an aggressive press and direct attacking play. Ikwaput found the net early on, but was denied by the offside flag.

The Ugandan remained a constant threat. In the sixth minute, she latched onto Ashalata Devi’s lofted through ball and attempted a chip over Moirangthem Monalisha Devi, but missed the target. Despite sustained pressure, Sribhumi showed composure at times, playing out from the back and building patient moves.

Karishma Purushottam Shirvoikar tested Elangbam Panthoi Chanu in the 11th minute, though without conviction. Rimpa then cut in from the right five minutes later but struck the side-netting, underlining Sribhumi’s sporadic threat.

East Bengal continued to probe, with Ikwaput firing over from distance in the 28th minute. Moments later, Ashalata’s cutback nearly found Soumya Guguloth, only for Monalisha to intercept. Ikwaput then beat her marker inside the box but failed to hit the target.

The breakthrough came in the 37th minute. A long ball towards Ikwaput was misjudged by Toijam Thoibisana Chanu, whose attempted header fell kindly for the forward. Ikwaput calmly slotted past the advancing Monalisha. She nearly doubled the lead before the break, but Thoibisana recovered to block, while Kayenpaibam Anju Chanu struck the crossbar at the other end, leaving East Bengal with a slender lead at half-time.

East Bengal struck again within a minute of the restart. Ikwaput surged forward, cut inside, and curled a precise effort into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-0.

The hosts tightened their grip thereafter, pinning Sribhumi deep. The visitors struggled to retain possession, though Rimpa’s cross in the 55th minute nearly found Dangmei Grace before Panthoi intervened. Three minutes later, Dangmei fired over after a loose clearance from Abena Anoma.

Ikwaput completed her hat-trick on the hour mark, turning sharply under pressure before lashing the ball past Monalisha for 3-0. Sribhumi responded with a brief spell of pressure but failed to create clear chances.

At the other end, Ikwaput nearly added a fourth in the 67th minute after combining with Sulanjana Raul, but Monalisha made a sharp save. East Bengal’s defence remained largely untroubled as Sribhumi’s attacking combinations failed to click.

The visitors pulled one back in the 80th minute following a midfield error. Nameirakpam Arina Devi drove forward and set up Rimpa, who finished clinically past Panthoi. It was only the second goal conceded by East Bengal in the league this season.

Though Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) beat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in a thrilling Super Over at Lucknow on Sunday, the encounter will be remembered more for the controversial dismissal of KKR batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi, given out for obstructing the field.

In the fifth over of the first innings, Raghuvanshi played one towards mid-on and took off for a run before being sent back by non-striker Cameron Green. As Raghuvanshi turned and headed back to his crease, a throw from LSG’s Mohammed Shami towards the striker’s end saw the ball hitting a diving Raghuvanshi. LSG appealed and on-field umpires Abhijeet Bengeri and Keyur Kelkar referred the matter to TV umpire Rohan Pandit, who declared Raghuvanshi out for obstructing the field. TV umpire Pandit claimed that Raghuvanshi had “changed his direction of movement” after seeing the ball being thrown at him. The decision has led to heated debates, both on and off the field.

However, former international umpires Anil Chaudhary and MR Singh are convinced that Raghuvanshi was not out, going by the rule book. “I did not feel that it was a deliberate change of direction by the batter simply because he had very little time. And change of direction cannot be the only reason to be given out. It has to be deliberate and willful,” Chaudhary, who officiated in 12 Tests, 49 ODIs and 64 T20Is told mid-day on Monday.

Chaudhary, 61, who is currently doing IPL commentary on JioHotstar, added: “It was not an easy call, but still, that’s how it is. The time was too short for him [Raghuvanshi] to manipulate. It’s a tight call and it’s easy during a postmortem.”

MR Singh, 71, who officiated in 10 ODIs apart from one Test and two women’s ODIs, also felt Raghuvanshi did not act deliberately. “Not out. It’s as simple as that. It was definitely not deliberate and that’s the essence of this law. It has got to be deliberate obstruction for it to be out. Also, some unnecessary words have been incorporated into this particular law, which is causing confusion among umpires,” he told mid-day.

MR Singh, who is currently guiding budding umpires in Mumbai, insisted that had he been the on-field umpire, he would not have even sent the matter upstairs. “I would not have gone to the third umpire. Not out, that’s it. Now, this decision when made on a platform like this [IPL], will only confuse umpires in future,” said Singh.

A disgruntled Raghuvanshi, who struck the boundary cushion with his bat and threw his helmet into the dugout, was fined 20 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one Demerit Point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct for Players.

Aiden Markram… caught at long-off

At 65-1 after 10.2 overs, LSG looked in control during their chase of 156 when set batsman Aiden Markram, looking to accelerate, hit Cameron Green towards long-off. Rinku took a running catch to his right, but on realising that the momentum was taking him across the boundary rope, he threw the ball up in the air, stepped outside the fence and returned to the field of play to complete the catch which broke a crucial 57-run stand between Markram and skipper Rishabh Pant.

Mukul Choudhary… caught at deep mid-wkt

Mukul Choudhary, LSG’s last-match hero vs KKR, pulled an Anukul Roy delivery towards the longest part of the fence, but didn’t get enough distance and Rinku, at deep mid-wicket, grabbed it easily. LSK slipped to 93-5 in 15.2 overs.

George Linde… caught at long-on

With 27 needed off 11 balls, all-rounder George Linde, looked to be the right man to take LSG across the finishline, before he decided to move outside the leg stump and hit pacer Vaibhav Arora towards long-on, only to find Rinku perfectly positioned on the fence to pouch it.

Himmat Singh… caught at deep backward square

With just eight required off the last four balls, Himmat Singh hit an outside-off delivery from pacer Kartik Tyagi towards deep backward square. The shot lacked power and flew towards Rinku, who made no mistake once again.

Markram… caught off a relay effort at long-on

In a dramatic Super Over, batting first, LSG were 1-1 off two balls when Markram hit spinner Sunil Narine towards long-on. Rovman Powell ran to his left and took the catch initially before realising he was about to step on the boundary rope. Showing sharp presence of mind, Powell threw the ball up in the air backwards, where Rinku arrived just in time, running in from long-off, to safely complete the catch.

LSG head coach Justin Langer defended sending out-of-form Nicholas Pooran to face KKR’s star spinner Sunil Narine in the Super Over, saying the team management thought the explosive batter was the best option despite his lean run.

Pooran got out on the first ball, bowled by Narine and LSG ended up at 1 for 2. KKR needed just one ball to win the match. “If you look at Nicky’s [Pooran] record, he’s seen Sunil Narine more than anyone in world cricket. So we felt that he was still the best option,” Langer said.
