Harmanpreet Kaur Receives National Honour; Receives The Padma Shri From The Indian President

Indian Women’s Cricket Team captain and star player Harmanpreet Kaur was awarded the illustrious Padma Shri award from the President of India, Droupadi Murmu. With that, she becomes only the fourth Indian woman cricketer to receive the award.

Harmanpreet is not only the captain of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team, but also one of the best batters of this generation. She was named the captain of the Indian squad in 2016 and has spent a decade as the leader of one of the best international women’s cricket teams in the world. newsindata.com

Harmanpreet Kaur Receives The Padma Shri

In 2025, Kaur led India to their first ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup victory, and that too on home soil. Not only that, but she has also broken several barriers for women in the sport in India.

Alongside stalwart Smriti Mandhana, Harman has been the face of Indian women’s cricket for a decade now. She became the first Indian, man or woman, to play in a foreign T20 league when she was roped in by the Sydney Thunder in the WBBL in 2016.

She was also instrumental in bringing a women’s T20 league to India, and she became one of the faces of the Women’s Premier League, or the WPL. She became the captain of the Mumbai Indians in the league, winning two titles in four years.

Harmanpreet Kaur is the third-highest Indian run scorer in the WODI format, having made 4541 runs in 164 games at an average of just over 35. In WT20Is, she is the third-highest run scorer for any nation ever, having made 3991 runs in 195 games.

On Monday, May 25, Harmanpreet received the Padma Shri from President Murmu at the first Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. She was recognised for her contributions to Indian cricket following the World Cup win on home soil last November.

At the ceremony, 58 people received the Padma Shri from various fields of the world, six received the Padma Bhushan, and two received the Padma Vibhushan.

In 2026, a total of 113 people received a Padma Shri, seven of whom were sports persons. This includes the likes of former Indian Men’s Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma and Indian Women’s Hockey Team goalkeeper Savita Punia.

As stated above, Harmanpreet Kaur becomes only the third Indian woman cricketer to receive the award, joining the prestigious list that also includes former national captain and administrator Diana Edulji, arguably the most iconic Indian cricketer in Mithali Raj, and one of the greatest bowlers in the sport, Jhulan Goswami.

IPL 2026: ‘Proud of the way we came back’ Ajinkya Rahane

Sunday’s match at the Eden Gardens was some 20 minutes old, and into the fourth over of the Delhi Capitals innings, when Rajasthan Royals sealed the last Playoffs slot of IPL-19 at the faraway Wankhede. RR’s win over Mumbai Indians doused the dying embers of Kolkata Knight Riders’s hopes, but their men who mattered came to know much later.

“We got to know when we finished our fielding, after those 20 overs. Before that, no instructions, nothing, that’s what we had decided before stepping onto the field. Our focus was to win this game, rather than think about what’s happening [elsewhere],” revealed KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane.

DC went on to set a target of 204 before bowling out KKR for 163 in the 19th over, Rahane signing off with a 39-ball 63 that included four boundaries and four sixes.

KKR were cruising before Kuldeep Yadav triggered a collapse in the 14th over. Kuldeep, adjudged Player of the Match, finished with 3-29 and could have had a hat-trick had wicketkeeper Abishek Porel not dropped Tejasvi Dahiya. “It happens,” said the spinner at the post-match chat, adding that he went home after the last match to iron out “some small things” with his coach.

It was time too for some looking back. “We’re really proud of the way we came back, showing character,” Rahane reflected. “I thought we were playing really good cricket [even when we were not winning], but kept losing [key] moments. It was really tough. We decided we will stay together, back each other,” revealed the skipper.

IPL 2026 | We are here to attack, not defend: Rajat Patidar

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s pursuit of back-to-back IPL titles will run into the season’s most disciplined bowling attack when they face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 here on Tuesday, with a direct place in the final at stake.

Both teams ended the league stage on 18 points, but RCB claimed the top spot due to superior NRR. RCB, under skipper Rajat Patidar, built their campaign around aggressive batting and a far more reliable bowling unit.

The defending champions repeatedly crossed 200 this season and benefited immensely from the experience of Virat Kohli and the pace duo of Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with the ball. GT, meanwhile, have surged into the Playoffs on the back of a formidable bowling attack and a top order that rarely allowed pressure to build.

GT’s bowling that has stood out in the second half of the season. The pace trio of Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Prasidh Krishna has consistently struck with the new ball. Patidar asserted that RCB would continue with their aggressive approach despite the high-scoring nature of the tournament.

“Our strength is bowling. The way we bowl in the Powerplay will be very crucial and everyone in the team knows that we are not here to defend, we are here with the mindset of attacking,” he said. “We will look for early wickets and that’s what we have done so far,” he added.

Rajat Patidar and Vijay Dahiya

GT assistant coach Vijay Dahiya emphasised the importance of bowling consistency in a season dominated by high scores. “At the end of the day, you need a solid bowling unit. What stands out for both teams is the consistency of their bowling attacks and the belief shown by captains and management in those bowlers,” he said.
