Glasgow hands over Commonwealth Games flag, baton to India ahead of Ahmedabad CWG 2030

Glasgow [Scotland], August 3 (ANI): The curtains came down on the 2026 Commonwealth Games after 11 days of competition, with Scotland formally handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, hosts of the landmark centenary edition in 2030, during a glittering closing ceremony on Sunday.

The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be held in Ahmedabad, making India only the second nation after Australia to host the multi-sport event on more than one occasion. India had previously staged the Games in New Delhi in 2010.

The Commonwealth Games flag and baton were presented to India’s representatives, Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi as part of the official handover ceremony. fish-roadgame.com

The closing ceremony began with a celebration of Scotland’s rich cultural heritage before transitioning into a colourful showcase of India’s cultural diversity and centuries-old traditions.

One of the highlights of the ceremony was a unique Indo-Scottish cultural collaboration, with musicians and dancers from both nations coming together for a vibrant ‘jugalbandi’ that symbolised the passing of the baton from Glasgow to Ahmedabad.

India also had plenty to celebrate on the sporting front, finishing fourth in the medals table with a haul of 39 medals, 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze, to cap off a successful campaign.

Although India’s tally was lower than the 61 medals won in Birmingham in 2022, the context tells a different story. Thirty of those medals had come in sports that were dropped from the Glasgow programme.

With only 122 athletes compared to 210 four years ago, India still managed to maintain its fourth-place finish while producing an even better medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals. Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh was the only Indian to win two medals.

With the ceremonial handover complete, the focus now shifts to Ahmedabad, which will host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030. (ANI)

“I’ve got no idea”: Aiden Markram on prospect of leading LSG next IPL season

New Delhi [India], August 3 (ANI): South African batter Aiden Markram said he has not given much thought to the prospect of leading Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) next year in the Indian Premier League (IPL), leaving the decision to the franchise management.

“I’ve got no idea," Markram said when asked by Cricinfo about the prospect of leading LSG next year.

“They can decide whatever they think is best. There are some quality leaders in that group that we have there, so I’m not too fussed about it. Whoever gets it, I’m sure will take it on and do a good job, but the thoughts haven’t been there just yet," he added.

Rishabh Pant stepped down as LSG captain in May after the team finished at the bottom of the points table. He was later traded to Delhi Capitals in exchange for Kuldeep Yadav.

LSG are yet to name their next captain, with Markram emerging as a strong contender due to his experience leading South Africa in T20 cricket and his association with the RPSG Group’s other franchises in the SA20 and The Hundred.

Markram also spoke about his experience of playing the shorter format, saying the pace of the game and the challenge of facing 10 balls from one end make it an interesting contest.

“It’s obviously much quicker, and still the idea of 10 balls from one side [is a challenge]. You sometimes think you’ve snuck five in, and you remember there’s still another five to the short side, or whatever it might be," he said, as quoted by Cricinfo.

“But good fun, great comp, great standard as well, so I’m thoroughly enjoying it," Markram added.

Markram joined Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 2 crore ahead of the 2025 IPL season and scored 445 runs. He was retained by the franchise for the 2026 season, continuing as a key top-order batter and opener. In the 2026 IPL season, Markram scored 231 runs in 12 matches for LSG. (ANI)

IND vs SL Tests | ‘I’m hoping to impress against quality batters’: Tanush Kotian

Mumbai and West Zone off-spinner Tanush Kotian, 27, was busy preparing for the upcoming Duleep Trophy which begins in Bengaluru on August 23. However, his plans have now changed. Instead, he will be leaving for Sri Lanka [SL] to join Shubman Gill’s Indian Test team as a net bowler.

“I was supposed to be leaving for Bengaluru tomorrow [Monday], but now I will be going to Sri Lanka on Tuesday instead,” Kotian told mid-day on Sunday.

India will play two Tests against SL, starting at Galle from August 15 onwards. Kotian, who has picked 131 scalps and scored 2168 runs in 44 first-class games, was part of India’s Test squad against Australia in 2024, when he was picked to replace R Ashwin, who retired after the third Test in Brisbane.

“I expected to get picked when the Indian team was announced [for the SL tour]. But now I’m getting a chance as a net bowler along with [left-arm spinner] Harsh Dubey. I will be bowling to some good batters during the net practice and have a chance to impress them. Playing against them [quality batters] will also help me grow as a bowler,” said Kotian, adding that he missed the opportunity to feature as a net bowler ahead of the Afghanistan Test at New Chandigarh in June, since he was playing in the T20 Mumbai League.

DPL: Central Delhi Kings continue winning run with thrilling four-wicket victory over Outer Delhi Warriors

New Delhi [India], August 3 (ANI): Central Delhi Kings maintained their unbeaten start to the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2026, registering their second consecutive victory with a thrilling four-wicket win over Outer Delhi Warriors in a rain-curtailed 10-over contest at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday.

Earlier, Outer Delhi Warriors posted a competitive 130/5 in their allotted 10 overs after being put into bat. Yajas Sharma led the charge with a blistering 39 off just 16 balls, while Mohit Panwar smashed 37 from 18 deliveries. Akshay Saini also chipped in with a quickfire 31 off 15 balls as the Warriors maintained an aggressive scoring rate throughout the innings.

Keshav Dabas was the standout bowler for Central Delhi Kings, claiming 2/14, while Arun Pundir, Tejas Baroka and Gavnish Khurana picked up a wicket each.
