Emperor Naruhito, King Willem-Alexander witness Japan-Netherlands FIFA World Cup stalemate

Dallas (Texas) [US], June 15 (ANI): Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako joined King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands in the stands as Daichi Kamada’s late equaliser secured Japan a dramatic 2-2 draw against the Dutch in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F opener on Sunday (Local Time). truewildgame.com

The official X account of the Royal House of the Netherlands shared photographs of the four royals together and wrote, “Sport brings people together! King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako watch together as the Oranje Leeuwen and the Samurai Blue face off in Dallas for their first group stage match of the FIFA World Cup."

The high-profile attendance added to the occasion as Japan staged a late comeback to secure a valuable point against one of Europe’s strongest sides.

After a tightly contested first half ended goalless, the Netherlands broke the deadlock six minutes after the restart. A delivery from Ryan Gravenberch found captain Virgil van Dijk, who finished clinically to put the Dutch ahead in the 51st minute.

Japan responded swiftly. In the 57th minute, Takefusa Kubo picked out Shunsuke Nakamura, who fired past goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen at the near post to restore parity and ignite the contest.

The Dutch regained control seven minutes later when Crysencio Summerville collected possession on the right flank and unleashed a powerful strike into the bottom corner to make it 2-1. Summerville had earlier been booked but quickly turned from villain to hero with his decisive contribution.

The Netherlands appeared set to claim all three points as they continued to enjoy the majority of possession, finishing with nearly 60 per cent of the ball and six shots on target. However, Japan produced one final twist.

With two minutes of normal time remaining, Koki Ogawa rose to meet a corner before a deflection helped the ball fall kindly for Daichi Kamada, who steered it into the net to level the scores at 2-2.

Despite six minutes of added time, neither side could find a winner, leaving Japan and the Netherlands with one point each from their opening Group F fixture. (ANI)

`It`s very rare in an ICC tournament...`: Deepti Sharma on her five-wicket haul

In the Women`s T20 World Cup 2026 match against Pakistan, Team India emerged victorious by 64 runs at the Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham.

During the match, Team India`s star all-rounder Deepti Sharma returned with the figures of five wickets for just 10 runs in four overs. Following this, she was also named the "Player of the Match".

Speaking about her five-wicket haul, she said that it is rare to pick up five wickets and end up on the winning side.

"It`s difficult to pick one moment because everything I was able to do in this game was special, but I`ll go with the five-wicket haul. It`s very rare in an ICC tournament to pick up a fifer and end up winning the game for your team," she said on JioStar.

She then revealed the discussion the "Women in Blue" had during the drinks break. Sharma said that the message for bowlers was to look at what they could do better in their next over.

"When the first drinks break happened, the discussion was about stepping up a little because we know the quality of talent and players we have in our side. Even if you go for runs in one over, it doesn`t matter because you`ll get a chance to make a comeback in the next. Everyone stayed positive, and the same message was passed on to every bowler, to stay on their toes, focus on what they could do better in the next over, and forget what happened in the previous one," added the 28-year-old cricketer.

Ben Stokes Must Not Retire Says Graeme Swann

Stokes is under invesitgation for the breach of ream protocols. (PC: RevSportz)

Former England spinner Graeme Swann is hoping that Ben Stokes does not bring an end to his career following the infamous nightclub incident involving him and Gus Atkinson, which prompted the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to launch an investigation.

Stokes and Atkinson remain under investigation and, as a result, have been left out of England’s squad for the second Test against New Zealand, which will be played at The Oval on 17 June. The incident reportedly took place shortly after the first Test, with both players alleged to have breached team protocol. Since reports emerged suggesting that Stokes was considering retirement from international cricket, speculation over his future has intensified.

Swann is firmly against the idea of Stokes stepping away from international cricket, believing him to be England’s best captain since Andrew Strauss.

“I don’t know. I hope it’s not the end because he’s the best captain we’ve had, arguably, since Andrew Strauss,” Swann said in an interview with PTI. “Alastair Cook’s not going to like that. Sorry, Cooky. I think he (Stokes) is a very good man-manager and leads by example. He really does lead by example. That’s where he’s let himself down.”

Swann also shared his views on the strict protocols introduced by the ECB.

“My thoughts are very mixed on this. The fact that there’s a curfew in place is… I’m a former player. You will never, ever convince me that a curfew is a good thing. It’s ridiculous that they even introduced it in the first place.

“I understand why they did it, because they’re trying to project a positive image from a public relations perspective. That doesn’t work. I think the ECB will learn a lesson from this and realise that they shouldn’t have done it at all,” he said.

Before Swann, several former England players, including Michael Vaughan and Nasser Hussain, also urged Stokes not to hang up his boots at this stage of his career.

`Wanted to finish game for the team...`: Shubman Gill

Punjab pacer Gurnoor Brar was more excited than under pressure on his India debut against Afghanistan and his first wicket settled the semblance of nerves, helping him walk away with a memorable outing in the rain-shortened first One-day International here. Brar starred with figures of 3/27 before skipper Shubman Gill unfurled a regal knock, powering India to a comfortable seven-wicket win on Saturday, and the hosts are now leading the three-match series 1-0.

"Obviously, I wouldn`t say there was pressure but there was excitement...like, I have to do well for India, I have to bowl well. Obviously, everyone wants to give their best here and I was doing the same. I just had to give my best and with God`s grace it went well," Brar said in an interaction with Gill, a video of which was shared by the BCCI. Brar earned his ODI call-up on the back of impressive performances in last season`s Vijay Hazare Trophy and also boasts of more than 50 wickets from 18 first-class matches.

In Dharamsala too, Brar impressed with his sharp pace as he repeatedly clocked above 145 clicks, stretching the speed gun to a highest mark of 148.2 kmph. Gill, who has closely followed Brar`s journey, asked the debutant about his emotions on earning the first India cap and the feeling of claiming a maiden international wicket. Brar replied that he felt relaxed after bagging the first wicket. "It`s a special feeling, like all the hard work has finally paid off, all the grind like I did in this heat...yeah it`s a special moment. "(The first wicket) yeah, it`s like a milestone that you just have to cross. When that first wicket happened suddenly it brought a sense of relief like `now there`s no tension`."

Gill then cheekily asked Brar whether he feared the opening wicket -- a skier offered by Ibrahim Zadran -- might be dropped given it was a slightly tricky chance. But the 26-year-old replied with a smile: "Since you were under it, I knew it wouldn`t be dropped." Despite Brar`s impressive spell, Afghanistan posted a competitive 194, powered by opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz`s explosive 102 off 51 balls. Chasing the target, India needed someone to anchor the innings, and Gill did so with typical assurance, crafting an unbeaten 84 on a slightly sticky surface to guide the hosts home in 22.5 overs. Gill said his objective was to stay till the end and ensure India crossed the line.

"So, when I went in to bat, my main thing was that I wanted to be there till the end. I wanted to finish the game for the team. And, you know, the way I was expecting the start, that start didn`t come. So, I knew I had to grind a bit. The wicket was good, but it was a bit sticky," said Gill. "The ball was turning a bit and seaming slightly. So I thought if I could get through that period, the game would become easier and easier. "Then once the runs started coming, I would find my rhythm. Obviously, you feel very good when you plan something and and everything goes according to the plan," Gill added.
