There was considerable speculation in the media about whether Gautam Gambhir would agree to Shreyas Iyer as captain of India’s T20 team, replacing the now out-of-favour Suryakumar Yadav.

According to me, the question is a non-starter. No one can have personal likes or dislikes influencing selection calls when it comes to the national team. Let’s hypothetically assume that, irrespective of the actual situation, Gautam and Shreyas aren’t on the same page. If that’s the truth, they don’t need to have the best of terms and don’t need to go out socially. They are professionals and all they need to do is plan and win games for India. As thorough professionals, they need to work together for one cause: serving Indian cricket. Having known Gautam well, I don’t think he will ever let personal choices influence captaincy calls, and if such a thing ever happens, it is the job of the selectors to overrule and convince the coach.

In India, we give far too much credence to personal likes and dislikes. Such things shouldn’t matter in sport. At this point, Shreyas is the best candidate to lead India, and that’s how he should be viewed. National interest and nothing else should take precedence. Not Gautam, not Ajit Agarkar, and not anyone else.

Gautam and Shreyas have worked together in the past and have won the IPL title with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Both will be aware of each other’s strengths, and will know each other’s weaknesses. And it isn’t the first time that two strong-willed men will share the changing room as captain and coach. Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli made themselves into a very potent combination, and then Rohit and Rahul Dravid were equally good. So, to suggest that egos could come in the way is irrelevant.

All that should matter now is performance and results. Is Shreyas scoring runs and doing so consistently? The answer is an overwhelming yes. That’s what Surya was unable to do, and that’s what has cost him the captaincy. Second, can Shreyas lead India with strategic acumen and does he have the potential to do so? As captain of Punjab Kings, he has led the team to the IPL final last year and he has also captained at the domestic level. He has held leadership positions for years now. As captain of KKR, he won a title and there can be no doubting his ability.

What is interesting in this choice of captain and coach is that it could well be the pair that carries India to the LA28 Olympic Games. And if they do make the podium, it could well be Shreyas who wears the Olympic gold medal as a historic first for India.

Though the Indian women’s team created history by winning their maiden ICC Women’s ODI World Cup last November, it seems Harmanpreet Kaur & Co will have to double their effort to win the Women’s T20 World Cup, beginning in England on June 12. India, who will be facing Pakistan in their opening game at Birmingham on June 14, lost a three-match T20I series 1-2 to hosts England on Tuesday.

India are placed in Group 1 along with Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Netherlands and former India captain Diana Edulji insisted that Harmanpreet and the seniors in the team will have to shoulder most of the responsibility.

“Every team is almost equal now. So, it’s all about who plays well on that day to go through. We have to be extremely professional. The players with more experience have to perform. Even Harman has to pick up her game. I’m not thinking too far ahead, about winning the title, but I hope they at least go till the final, otherwise, it will be said that this [ODI World Cup triumph] was a fluke,” Edulji told mid-day on Thursday.

The former captain reckoned that frequent changes in the playing XI is hampering the team’s combination. “I watched the last three games and can’t understand why they [Indian team] are struggling to beat England. You lost the second match [at Bristol on May 30] after being in a winning position. Then we could have defended 180 [in the third match at Taunton on June 2]. They’re chopping and changing too much. The T20 World Cup is just around the corner, so they should have their playing XI ready by now and should play that set of players only. This is not a practice arena anymore,” said Edulji, expressing concern about openers Shafali Verma (35 runs in three games), Smriti Mandhana (40 in three games) and skipper Harmanpreet’s (84 in two games) form. “Shafali is not getting runs. Now, if you’re not going to give a good start, it’s going to put pressure all the way through till the 20th over. Smriti’s also struggling. I still feel T20 is not our forte. We play too many dot balls. That has to come down, rotate the strike with singles. You don’t have to hit a boundary off every ball,” remarked Edulji.

When asked about Mumbai batter Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored 99 in her last three games, Edulji said: “She [Rodrigues] is good, but I think she gets carried away. She got bowled [on 29 in the third game] unnecessarily by stepping out to [pacer] Lauren Bell,” said Edulji stressing on the need for every player to take up responsibility. “Put a price tag on your wickets. There is no need for the lower order batters to come out at all if Harman and she [Rodrigues] can get a partnership,” concluded Edulji.

India women’s cricket team star Jemimah Rodrigues posted a heartfelt message to her mother Lavita on the occasion of her birthday on Thursday.

Sharing this picture of her family to her 3.9 million Instagram followers, the batter captioned the post: “Happy Birthday mumma! You’re the reason our family stands strong. The greatest blessing I pray for you is that God continues to keep that big smile on your face.”

Rodrigues, who was part of the Indian team that lost a three-match T20I series to England recently, will next be seen in action for India at the T20 World Cup in England and Wales, beginning on June 12.

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has credited ex-India captain Dilip Vengsarkar for fighting with the selectors to pick him in India’s squad for the 1988-89 West Indies tour.

At the launch of the book A Legend with Difference, written by Vengsarkar’s King George High School teammate Sanjay Satam, at the MCA-BKC academy on Wednesday, Manjrekar, who was India’s top-scorer in that series with 200 runs, revealed that he was the squad’s 17th player.

“My first selection for India was when he [Vengsarkar] was the captain on the 1989 tour of West Indies. We were in Hyderabad and the selection meeting went on for two hours and we were all in our rooms waiting for the good news as we were all on the fringe of playing for India. And I remember Dilip came in and said: ‘There’s too much tension and stress in the selection meeting’. The greatest stress for him was to get me in the team. He got a lot of resistance from the selectors, saying that I [Manjrekar] was not ready don’t deserve to be here, but Dilip put his foot down and kept fighting, and I was the 17th member picked on that tour of the West Indies,” said Manjrekar, who went on to score an impressive 108 in the second Test at Bridgetown in April 1989, facing up to legendary pacers like Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose, Ian Bishop and Courtney Walsh.

Manjrekar, 60, also recalled how he, Vengsarkar and a young Sachin Tendulkar had fun despite their big age difference. He said: “Despite the age gap and the stature gap as well, we were buddies. And I find it remarkable on that tour of New Zealand, I think 1990, when three generations of players, Dilip, myself, I think there was a [age] difference of about seven-eight years, and Sachin Tendulkar another six-seven years, the three of us hung around together. We were always there together and having fun. Dilip was the captain on one particular tour, but would hang with us and it was amazing that a guy who is already 100 Test matches old, found time and had the humility to be with people like us.”

Meanwhile, Vengsarkar, a veteran of 116 Tests, who is also a former national chief selector, was asked if the emphasis on domestic cricket should be stronger. “Yes, it’s very important, because all those players playing domestic cricket have that dream of playing for the country. So, if they do well, then they should be picked. I believe form and fitness are very important. If you’re in form and if you’re fit, then you should be picked at that point of time, na pehle na baad mein [neither before nor after]. And after a year or so, a player might lose interest, or he might lose his form and fitness. Picking them at that time would be stupidity,” Vengsarkar said.
