Bafana Bafana players could reportedly earn a payout of around R2 million each after securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Hugo Broos‘ side booked their place at football’s biggest tournament and will kick off their campaign against co-hosts Mexico on Thursday in the opening match of the competition.

For qualifying for the World Cup, the South African Football Association (SAFA) is set to receive $9 million (approximately R150 million) from FIFA, along with an additional $1.5 million (around R25 million) earmarked for tournament preparations.

According to reports, an agreement between SAFA and the players guarantees a minimum payout of R2 million per player for participating in the group stage.

Bafana eyeing big prize at World Cup

Should Bafana Bafana progress to the Round of 16, the team would unlock a further financial windfall, with FIFA prize money increasing to roughly R180 million.

The rewards become even greater deeper into the tournament. Reports suggest the players could collectively share as much as R365 million in bonuses, with individual earnings potentially reaching R14 million if South Africa were to achieve the unthinkable and lift the World Cup trophy.

“This is an agreement between SAFA and the players following our meeting. It is not an agreement between FIFA and the players. Coach Hugo Broos and his assistant Helman Mkhalele have their own separate contracts with SAFA,” a source told KickOff.

Attention now shifts to Bafana Bafana’s opening World Cup fixture against Mexico. The hosts enter the tournament in impressive form, having won six of their last eight matches while maintaining a formidable record on home soil.

South Africa have prepared for the World Cup with warm-up matches against Panama, Nicaragua and Jamaica, giving Broos valuable opportunities to fine-tune his squad ahead of the country’s biggest football challenge in years.

A place in the knockout stages would not only represent a historic achievement for Bafana Bafana but would also deliver a significant financial boost for both the players and SAFA.

Bafana are yet to reach a World Cup knockout round in their history.

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 8, 2026 – Tributes continue to flow in for former Impala RFC player Robert ‘Majei’ Aringo who passed away over the weekend.

Reeling in shock, friends, family, former teammates, rugby lovers and all those who crossed paths with him have eulogised a man who boasted a colourful career in the game, featuring even for the national 7s side, Shujaa.

In its condolence message, the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) paid homage to Aringo, who was part of the victorious Shujaa team that famously upset Fiji to win the Singapore 7s in 2016.

“We join the entire rugby fraternity in mourning Robert Aringo fondly known as “Majei”. Robert was a player at Impala RFC and also played for the national team Kenya Shujaa which he joined during the 2015-2016 season.He was also part of the team that led Kenya to the first ever Sevens series Cup in Singapore in 2016.He also featured for the Kenya Simbas,” the Union said in a statement.

Former Shujaa strengthening and conditioning (S&C) coach Geoffrey Kimani remembered Aringo for his outstanding qualities, having joined the team as a rookie in the 2015/16 World Rugby Series season.

“Met Robert Aringo in 2015-2016 as one of the young outstanding players joining team for the 2015-16 season ,went on to be one of 6 rookies that were on the field as Kenya won its first series cup in Singapore,” Kimani said.

He added: “Young but strong as an Ox, always had something funny to say if only to get my attention and prolong rest times on those grueling running days… hardworking, too.”

Remembering his progression from a high school player to a promising coaching career, Impala RFC assistant coach Oneal Juma Stephen said Aringo will be greatly missed in the game.

“You started as my player at the Academy, became my teammate, and later my coaching colleague. Thank you for the memories, friendship, and impact you made on so many lives. Rest in peace, Robert. You will be greatly missed,” he said.

Nondescripts RFC, Impala’s next-door neighbours at Ngong’ Road, also passed their condolences, noting that Aringo’s passing is a loss for all, regardless of club affiliation.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sydney Gondgodya and Robert Aringo ‘Majei’. The game lost warriors. The Black Pirates and Impala RFC lost brothers and so have we. To their family, teammates, and the entire Pirates and Impala fraternity: our hearts are with you. Rest easy Sydney and Robert,” Nondies said on their Facebook page.

Aringo honed his skills, experience and talent at St Mary’s School, Nairobi before seamlessly transitioning to club football.

He combined his raw power with intelligent game reading and management ability that was evidenced by his versatility as a back row, half back as well as a scrum half.

Besides winning the Singapore 7s, Aringo was a mainstay on the local circuit, starring for Impala Saracens as they reached the Kenya Cup final in 2016 before ultimately falling 22-5 to Kabras Sugar.

Rough month for rugby

His shock demise is the latest in a series of calamities that have not only befallen Kenyan rugby but also their Ugandan neighbours.

A day before Aringo’s passing, Stanbic Black Pirates player Sydney Gongodyo died from injuries incurred after he was beaten by a mob in the Bukoto area in Kampala.

Preliminary reports from the police indicate that Gongodyo was descended upon by a group of motorcycle transporters (boda boda), accusing him of snatching a lady’s handbag.

Despite being rescued by police and taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment, Gongodyo unfortunately passed away.

Only a week earlier, he had featured for his club in the Enterprise Cup final against Kabras Sugar at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.

Back home in Kenya, former national women’s rugby 15s head coach Felix ‘Mwalimu’ Oloo was laid to rest in Asembo, Siaya County, over two weeks after he passed away in a road accident in the United States.

On the same weekend, Women’s Kenya Cup champions Mwamba RFC held a vigil for former scrumhalf Michelle Alivitsa, who passed away after a long illness last month.

Strengthened his credentials

Topping the ante-post betting market at 3/1 is exciting three-year-old Star Major, who strengthened his credentials after winning the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 for trainer James Crawford.

He is followed by Note To Self (4/1), Wish List (5/1), Happy Verse (6/1), Regulation (8/1) and Legal Counsel (25/2) – all, incredibly, from the Justin Snaith yard.

South Africa’s richest race

Among those withdrawn from contention were defending champion The Real Prince, as well as See It Again, Parisian Walkway, Aristotle, Grand Empire, Atticus Finch, JP’s Palace, Wild Intent, Fire Attack, Buster Barnes and Otto Luyken.

Fiercely contested renewal

The final Durban July field will comprise 18 runners, with two reserves also selected.

With just weeks remaining until South Africa’s biggest horse race, the latest developments have significantly altered the betting landscape, setting the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested renewal of the iconic event.

Sir John Kirwan has joked that the All Blacks will “steal” the Springboks’ intellectual property when Tony Brown returns to New Zealand.

Speaking on the Rivals podcast, the All Blacks great and Springbok legend Victor Matfield shared their views on the announcement that Brown will join the All Blacks coaching setup after the World Cup.

Brown, currently the Springboks’ attack coach, signed a two-year contract with NZ Rugby and is expected to work under Dave Rennie from 2028.

Kirwan welcomed the move and praised New Zealand Rugby for planning so far ahead.

“I’m really actually quite excited,” said Kirwan.

“For New Zealand Rugby to announce something so far ahead, for me, it’s the first time I’ve seen them being really positive in what they want to do moving forward.”

The former All Blacks wing then joked that Brown’s time with the Springboks could prove valuable for New Zealand when he eventually returns home.

“I understand that he has to stay and do his job, but then we’ll steal all your IP, Victor, and bring it back to New Zealand – which is what you guys have done in the first place.”

Matfield laughed off the suggestion, but admitted the appointment must be a special moment for Brown.

“That must be Tony’s dream,” said Matfield.

“He’s a New Zealander, he’s a proud All Black and this must be the ultimate job for him.

“We’ll use him, we’ll tap into all his knowledge for this last year and hopefully he gets a World Cup with the Boks.”

The former Springbok captain then raised an interesting question about New Zealand Rugby’s long-standing selection policy.

Unlike South Africa, New Zealand generally does not select players who are contracted overseas, a rule that has seen several high-profile stars become unavailable for the All Blacks after leaving the country.

Matfield wondered why that restriction does not appear to apply to coaches.

“Can I just ask a question?” he said.

“Why is it that New Zealand doesn’t select players who play overseas, but select coaches who coach overseas? Why is that allowed?”
