Free State Crinums Complete Unbeaten Season to Claim Fifth Telkom Netball League Title
The Free State Crinums completed a perfect season to be crowned Telkom Netball League Division 1 champions for a fifth time, beating the defending champions Golden Fireballs 46-32 in the final at Rembrandt Hall, University of Pretoria, on Monday, 15 June 2026.
In a repeat of last year’s Division 1 final, the unbeaten Crinums faced the defending champions Fireballs in a highly anticipated title decider. The Crinums arrived yet to taste defeat in the campaign, while the Fireballs were determined to defend the crown they claimed a year ago, setting the stage for a thrilling battle between two of the competition’s standout sides. rocore.sbs

The opening quarter lived up to expectations as both teams went toe-to-toe from the first centre pass, deadlocked at 3-all after two minutes and clinical in converting their own centre passes. Fireballs goal attack Owethu Ngubane gifted the Crinums a chance when an errant pass found wing attack Karla Victor, but the defending champions were let off the hook as a held ball call handed possession straight back.
Crinums goalkeeper Liame de Lange produced an important intercept with less than five minutes left in the quarter, only for Fireballs goalkeeper Tinita van Dyk to respond with a turnover of her own after capitalising on a loose ball. The defensive battle continued to the end of the quarter, with the score locked at 11-11.
The tension rose in the second quarter as the match grew increasingly physical. Fireballs wing defence Tarle Mathe produced a crucial turnover and, eager to restart play quickly, snatched the ball from Crinums wing defence Sizeka Adoons to take the penalty, but her eagerness proved costly as she was penalised for contact.
The Crinums capitalised on the mounting pressure to extend their lead to three goals. Both goalkeepers, De Lange and Van Dyk, pulled through for their sides, exchanging intercepts, but Crinums shooter Bianca Lubbe added two single shots to help the side stretch the lead to five goals at half-time.
In the third quarter, the Fireballs began to feel the Crinums’ heat, losing several balls in their goal third through unforced errors and missing under the post, which allowed the Crinums to move seven goals clear midway through the quarter. The Fireballs shooting duo of Nonsikelelo Mazibuko and Ngubane struggled to find rhythm in the circle as relentless Crinums defence forced rushed decisions and uncharacteristic misses.

The low-scoring nature of the quarter reflected the defensive dominance, with the Fireballs managing one goal in eleven minutes and the Crinums adding three as the Free State side extended their lead to ten goals ahead of the final quarter.
In the final quarter, Fireballs coach Dr Elsje Jordaan reshaped the shooting circle, moving Van Dyk from goalkeeper to goal shooter and bringing Mazibuko on at goal attack in place of Ngubane.
The changes yielded some reward as the Fireballs regained confidence and tried to cut the deficit, but the Crinums left no stone unturned to the final whistle, securing a 46-32 victory and finishing the campaign unbeaten after fourteen matches to claim their fifth title.
“They were unshaken, going out there and being untouchable, knowing exactly what was needed and playing beautiful netball even during the final,” said Mosoahle. “They put in the work, and I would like to thank the two captains for keeping them calm even when we were doing well in the first and second leg.”
“The team definitely understood the mandate”
Earlier, the battle for Division 1 status in the promotion and relegation match also lifted the crowd. Fresh from being crowned Division 2 champions after edging the Kingdom Queens by a single goal the previous night, the Western Cape Tornados faced the ultimate test against the Kingdom Stars, who finished bottom of the Division 1 log after winning one of their twelve round-robin matches.
The match was a battle of attrition from the first centre pass, producing multiple turnovers before the Stars scored two minutes in. The Stars relied on their big-match temperament to settle quicker and took a 12-8 lead at the end of the opening quarter. The Tornados refused to back down in the second quarter, matching the Stars’ intensity in a goal-for-goal affair with defensive pressure at the heart of the contest.
The third quarter followed a similar pattern, with both teams locked in a tactical battle where every possession mattered. The Stars held a narrow five-goal lead at the end of the third quarter even though the quarter itself ended 10-10, and it was clear that discipline, composure and clinical finishing would decide the final fifteen minutes.

L’Arabie Saoudite et l’Uruguay se sont quittés sur un score de 1-1 lors de la première journée du groupe H de la Coupe du Monde 2026. Un résultat qui empêche la Celeste de profiter pleinement du nul enregistré entre l’Espagne et le Cap-Vert dans l’autre rencontre de la poule.
L’Uruguay a manqué l’occasion de prendre seul les commandes du groupe H. Opposés à une équipe saoudienne disciplinée et déterminée, les hommes de Marcelo Bielsa ont dû se contenter d’un partage des points (1-1) au terme d’une rencontre disputée.
Ali Al-Amri surprend l’Uruguay
Malgré leur statut de favoris, les Sud-Américains ont longtemps buté sur une formation saoudienne bien organisée défensivement. Les Faucons verts ont même créé la surprise en ouvrant le score à la 41e minute grâce à Ali Al-Amri, auteur d’une réalisation qui a récompensé les efforts de son équipe avant la pause.
Mené au tableau d’affichage, l’Uruguay a tenté de hausser le rythme au retour des vestiaires. Les coéquipiers de Federico Valverde ont multiplié les offensives et fini par trouver la faille à la 80e minute. Le défenseur Maximiliano Araújo a remis les deux équipes à égalité en inscrivant le but salvateur de la Celeste.
Un match nul qui ne profite personne
Malgré une domination territoriale plus importante et plusieurs situations dangereuses en seconde période, les Uruguayens n’ont pas réussi à arracher la victoire dans les dernières minutes. L’Arabie Saoudite a fait preuve d’une grande solidarité pour préserver ce précieux résultat jusqu’au coup de sifflet final.
Ce match nul redistribue les cartes dans le groupe H. Avec un point chacun, l’Uruguay et l’Arabie Saoudite rejoignent l’Espagne et le Cap-Vert, qui se sont également neutralisés plus tôt. Friday Night Lights: Nienaber’s last dance with Leinster?
Friday night’s Vodacom URC final against the Bulls could mark Jacques Nienaber’s last match in Leinster colours.
The former Springbok coach still has a year remaining on his contract, but recent events have cast serious doubt over whether he will remain in Dublin beyond this season.
Nienaber won two World Cups – including as head coach in 2023 – before joining Leinster, but he has become a lightning rod for criticism in Ireland following another failed European campaign.
Leinster reached the Investec Champions Cup final but were destroyed by defending champions Bordeaux Bègles, prompting renewed scrutiny of Nienaber’s defensive system and overall influence on the team.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: The captain carrying Leinster’s burden
In an explosive press conference earlier this month, Nienaber admitted he was uncertain about his future at the Irish province, saying he did not feel valued and suggesting public and media sentiment could ultimately determine whether he stays or goes.
Asked directly if he would be staying, the 53-year-old responded: “Your question is, am I going to be here? I hope so. Currently, I’m not sure, to be honest, because people don’t value me here. They don’t.”
O’BRIEN: Leinster, Bulls peaked at right time
Leinster overcame a shock Champions Cup semi-final loss to Northampton last season to win the URC title against the Bulls at Croke Park.
The Irish giants will have to repeat that feat to salvage a season that once again brought European heartache. Leinster have now lost five finals since last winning the title in 2017-18.
Whether a second consecutive URC title will be enough to silence the critics and convince Nienaber to stay remains to be seen.

WINNER TAKES ALL: South Africa Face Ireland in Ultimate Nations Cup ‘Quarter-Final’ Crossover
CAPE TOWN – Following a well-deserved rest day, the temperature is set to skyrocket at the Hartleyvale Stadium today as hosts South Africa prepare for their defining moment in the FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup. In what has effectively become a straight-knockout quarter-final, South Africa face off against world number 9 Ireland in a high-stakes, winner-takes-all clash for a spot in the semi-finals.
The tournament’s unique 9-team setup has thrown Pool B into a dramatic final-day script. Undefeated France have already mathematically secured a top two spot in the pool with a perfect 6 points from their first two games. This leaves South Africa and Ireland, both locked on 3 points apiece, to battle for the one remaining semi-final ticket.
While the objective is identical for both teams, South Africa hold a minute but priceless statistical advantage. Thanks to a clinical, masterful 4-0 dismantling of the United States on Saturday, which bounced back brilliantly from an opening 4-2 loss to France, South Africa possess a superior net goal difference over the Irishmen. Ireland secured a 3-0 win over the US before falling 2-0 to France. Consequently, while Ireland must win to advance, a draw will be enough to see South Africa march through to the final four.
With everything on the line, the South African camp will undoubtedly be treating this encounter with the intensity of a major tournament final. The rest day provided a crucial window to reset tactical plans, analyse Ireland’s defensive structures, and fine-tune their attacking clinical edge. Crucially, the team will be looking to harness the energy of another passionate, roaring Hartleyvale crowd to provide that extra yard of pace and home-turf advantage when the pressure mounts.
History heavily flavours this matchup. South African fans will vividly remember the inaugural Men’s Nations Cup final in Potchefstroom back in 2022, where the home side snatched a breathtaking 4–3 victory over Ireland to lift the trophy. Today’s encounter carries that exact same heavyweight gravity, and Team SA are counting on the Cape Town public to recreate the wall of sound that carried them over the line against the USA.
While Pool B’s destiny rests on this afternoon’s blockbuster, Pool A remains an absolute mathematical logjam heading into the final preliminary fixtures.
