With only a few days to go until the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off, AIPS finds it unacceptable that many colleagues, who have been duly accredited by FIFA to cover the tournament, are facing varying degrees of US visa challenges.

AIPS is calling on FIFA to intervene and ensure that the affected media representatives are not wrongfully denied entry into the USA.

On Friday, 5 June, the AIPS President, Gianni Merlo, on behalf of the AIPS Executive Committee, sent the letter below to Bryan Swanson, the FIFA Director of Media Relations, and Jochen Steinhoff, the FIFA Head of Media Operations & Services.

In this difficult time for the entire world, on the eve of the futuristic 2026 FIFA World Cup, we find ourselves facing a long-standing and unacceptable problem for us journalists: the denial of entry visas to regularly accredited colleagues.

There are many cases: Iranian colleagues, African colleagues, some of whom have been given single entries, so if their team goes to play in Canada or Mexico and they follow it, they can no longer return to the States. The cases are countless and, I repeat, unacceptable. Politicians always say that sport unites and builds bridges between young people in countries in conflict, but in this case, we are going in the opposite direction.

We believe it is important to allow colleagues to attend the event and work, because their presence will be crucial to the image of sport and what it represents, especially in a country like the United States of America, where freedom of the press is a must.

I hope FIFA can do everything possible to secure visas. We are already significantly behind schedule, and many colleagues have already lost the opportunity to use plane tickets booked on time; they will also face significant additional expenses.

On Sunday night, the All Blacks unexpectedly dropped the news that Springbok attack coach Tony Brown – who has become the right-hand man to Rassie Erasmus – will return home to take up a coaching position with the New Zealand Rugby Union in 2028.

To make such an announcement 18 months before his contract starts was seen by many as an unusual move, and perhaps as a strategy to disrupt the Springboks on the eve of the Test season, which includes a four-match series against New Zealand.

Brown has been hugely popular since joining the Springboks in 2024, and he has been instrumental in adding an attacking evolution to the team’s play.

True to his word, Brown has honoured his contract in full, remaining committed to the Springboks, while being open about his personal desire to return home to be closer to his family and give back to New Zealand Rugby.

“Tony has made a remarkable difference, both on and off the field, and he has always been upfront with us about wanting to be closer to his family and about the All Blacks holding a special place in his heart, and we are genuinely delighted for him.

“We’ve made the mistake in the past of negotiating contracts in a RWC year, and this clarity will allow us all to go full steam ahead with our preparations for this and next season.”

New chapter

Brown expressed his gratitude to Erasmus and SA Rugby for the opportunity and was emphatic about where his focus lies for the foreseeable future.

“My contract with New Zealand Rugby only begins in 2028, so there is still a long road ahead before that comes into play,” said Brown. “Right now, I am fully committed to the Springboks. What we are building and trying to achieve as a team over the next two years is my only focus.”

Brown, currently the Springboks’ attack coach, has signed a two-year contract with NZ Rugby and will join the All Blacks after the 2027 World Cup in Australia.

The former All Blacks flyhalf has spent the past two years helping shape the evolution of the Springboks’ attack under Rassie Erasmus and is contracted to SA Rugby until the end of the 2027 World Cup.

While the appointment has been widely viewed as a major coup for NZ Rugby, Donald suspects there may be more to the timing of the announcement, ahead of the 2026 international season.

Speaking on The Aftermatch podcast, the 2011 World Cup-winning flyhalf suggested the move could even be a subtle psychological play ahead of this year’s Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series between the Springboks and All Blacks.

“He’s probably the most desired assistant coach in all of rugby and they’ve got their man,” said Donald.

“I initially thought, ‘Crazy timing – why are we announcing this?’ But then I thought about it. Is it actually a power play from New Zealand Rugby to get into the heads of their greatest rival? Just to have it in their minds that he’s coming to us in 18 months’ time.”

Donald then took the theory a step further.

“Maybe it’s the ultimate mind game back at Rassie,” he said. “Seeing their man in a Springbok tracksuit, saying he’ll be in an All Blacks tracksuit in 18 months’ time.”
