African football leagues round-up: Club Africain seal their first Tunisian Ligue 1 title since 2015
African football is alive every weekend with exciting league action around the continent, and our weekly round-up of league action highlights a selection of the most important results. In Tunisia, Club Africain sealed their first Ligue 1 title since 2015 with a dramatic stoppage-time strike from Ghaith Zaalouni to dethrone Esperance on Sunday. Defender Zaalouni was allowed to strike from outside the penalty area in the 16th minute of added time to put Club Africain clear at the top of the standings on 65 points, five ahead of Esperance with one match remaining. forestarrow.help
It was Club Africain’s 14th league crown and marked an 11th championship for 76-year-old coach Faouzi Benzarti, who had previously won five titles with Esperance.
If Esperance are to join Club Africain in the field for next season’s TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, they will need to beat Ben Guerdane away on Thursday in their final fixture of the season, or otherwise open the door for third-placed CS Sfaxien, who are only one point behind.
CSS’s last league game is at home to Etoile Sahel on Wednesday.
Mauritania
A comprehensive 4-1 victory for FC Nouadhibou over ASC Police at the Cheikha Ould Boïdiya Stadium in Nouakchott on Sunday was a fitting way to celebrate a ninth successive Super D1 title.
Nouadhibou, who have won 14 league crowns in total with veteran Spanish coach Javi Lopez in charge, had been confirmed champions on Saturday when their closest challengers, AS Douanes, were held to a 1-1 draw away at Kaedi.
The stalemate left Douanes seven points adrift with only two matches left to play in the season, and Sunday’s win for Nouadhibou extended their lead at the top of the standings to 10 points.
It was also a vital point for Kaedi, which means they cannot be relegated, with FC Ksar and Inter Nouakchott condemned to the second tier next season.
FC Ksar are five-time former champions of Mauritania.

Uganda
Leaders Vipers stumbled in their bid to move closer to a successful defence of their Premier League crown when they were held to a 1-1 home draw by Uganda Revenue Authority at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende on Friday.
However, they could yet secure the championship this week if they beat Police in Kampala on Tuesday and other results go their way.
Vipers had to come from behind to draw with URA, with Usama Arafat’s ninth goal of the league season seeing them move to 60 points from 27 games.
They are five points ahead of Kampala Capital City Authority, who are in action away on Wednesday against Uganda People’s Defence Force in Bombo.
Champions League spots
The last few weeks have seen league champions decided across several countries, with clubs qualifying to compete in next season’s TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.
They are Mouloudia Alger (Algeria), Petro Atlético (Angola), Gaborone United (Botswana), Rahimo (Burkina Faso), Aigle Noir (Burundi), ASEC Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire), Lijabatho (Lesotho), La Cure Waves (Mauritius), Foresters (Seychelles), and Power Dynamos (Zambia).

LALIGA Matchday 36 preview: Crucial midweek action awaits us – see all fixtures
The fate of several Spanish clubs could be decided this midweek, with LALIGA EA Sports Matchday 36 taking place across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. FC Barcelona may have already clinched the title, but there is still so much else to decide over the final few fixtures of the season.

The first couple of games of the matchday take place on Tuesday night and feature one European aspirant at home against a club involved in the relegation battle as the visitors. The first is RC Celta vs Levante UD, with both sides coming off impressive victories last round, while the second is Real Betis vs Elche CF, two teams who earned important draws on the weekend.

There is one more Tuesday night game, with CA Osasuna taking on Atlético de Madrid in Pamplona. Fans of Los Colchoneros are counting down the final matches of Antoine Griezmann, so will be tuning in to see one of the Frenchman’s last outings with the team.
Wednesday’s slate has four fixtures, starting with a double header at 19:00 CEST, when RCD Espanyol host Athletic Club and Villarreal CF take on Sevilla FC. These are two more games pitting teams in the European and relegation battles against each other. Athletic Club are still in with a chance of European qualification and Villarreal CF have already qualified for the Champions League but want to finish third. Meanwhile, RCD Espanyol still haven’t won a game in 2026 and remain at risk of relegation, while Sevilla FC will hope to add to their mini revival of two victories in a row.

At 21:30 CEST, newly crowned champions FC Barcelona are in action away at relegation zone side Deportivo Alavés. Barça have the chance to reach 100 points if they win all of their remaining fixtures, so will still have something to play for, while the Basques desperately need points to avoid the drop.
At the same time, Getafe CF take on RCD Mallorca at the Coliseum. This is yet another duel between clubs fighting for different objectives, as Los Azulones currently find themselves in the final Conference League spot and hope to stay there, while the visitors are 16th and need a few more points to secure survival.
Valencia CF vs Rayo Vallecano is a rare midtable battle in this matchday, and that fixture kicks off Thursday night’s action. Curiously, Valencia CF haven’t beaten Los Franjirrojos at Mestalla since 2018, so the visitors will hope to keep that run going as they aim to build up momentum before the Conference League final.
By the time Girona FC vs Real Sociedad kicks off later on Thursday evening, there is a chance the Catalan outfit could find themselves inside the relegation zone. Either way, this is a huge fixture for Los Blanquivermells as they aim to stay in LALIGA EA SPORTS for a fifth consecutive season.

The final game of the round is Real Madrid vs Real Oviedo at the Bernabéu. The Asturian side may already be mathematically relegated by this point, but even if that is the case, they’ll savour this trip to Spain’s capital to take on Los Blancos. Not since 2001 have Real Oviedo played at the Bernabéu, and they’ll hope the next visit comes after a much shorter wait.
