Une déclaration forte, immédiatement accompagnée d’arguments sur le profil de l’ancien attaquant merengue :

« Il doit être une légende. Quelqu’un qui a joué au Real Madrid pendant 16 saisons, qui a marqué plus de 300 buts et qui a été sélectionné plus de 100 fois en équipe nationale. »

Un symbole du madridisme

Pour Enrique Riquelme, le choix de Raúl s’impose presque comme une évidence. L’ancien capitaine incarne, selon lui, l’ADN du club et la continuité du projet madrilène :

« Il n’y a personne qui connaisse mieux la Maison Blanche. Nous pensons que c’est la bonne personne. Nous avons besoin de quelqu’un capable de transmettre ce madridisme », a-t-il insisté.

Dans un contexte électoral de plus en plus intense, chaque déclaration prend une dimension stratégique. Et cette nouvelle sortie de Riquelme s’inscrit clairement dans une volonté de séduire de nouveaux votants à l’approche du vote décisif.

Three South Africans have been recognised for their outstanding contributions during the 2025-26 Vodacom URC season.

Chris Smith, Quan Horn and Evan Roos were among the first batch of award winners announced by the URC ahead of the semi-finals.

Lions flyhalf Smith claimed the Golden Boot award after finishing as the competition’s leading point-scorer during the regular season with 149, including 49 conversions and 17 penalties.

It was the second time Smith won the award after previously doing so with the Bulls in 2024.

“You do really have to put the work in,” Smith said. “It’s a daily work-on and you have to focus on the small things and the detail to be able to kick at a good percentage.”

Smith also praised Lions kicking coach Morné Steyn.

“You honestly couldn’t have a much better mentor,” he said.

MORNÉ: Smith deserves Bok call-up

Meanwhile, Lions fullback Horn secured the Ironman award after playing every single minute of the regular season – a remarkable 1,440 across 18 matches.

“As a player, being part of the match 23 ignites confidence knowing you are backed week in and week out,” Horn said.

Stormers No 8 Roos won the Top Try Scorer award after crossing 12 times during the league stage.

Stormers director of rugby John Dobson hailed Roos’ old-school approach to the game.

“He’s just a kid who enjoys rugby,” Dobson said. “He just wants the ball in his hands, he wants to play, he wants to tackle people.”

Roos said he was simply enjoying his rugby.

“The tries are just a nice bonus for me,” he said.

The other awards announced saw Dragons lock Ben Carter win the Tackle Machine prize for the best tackle success rate among players with more than 150 tackles (97.6%), while Ospreys flyhalf Jack Walsh collected the Playmaker award after impressing with his try assists, offloads and defenders beaten during the season.

Qui du Sénégal ou de la Tanzanie soulèvera le trophée de la Coupe d’Afrique des nations U-17 (CAN) – Maroc 2026 ? Même si les Lionceaux de la Teranga semblent avoir les faveurs des pronostics, les Serengeti Boys sont capables d’aller au bout de leur rêve.

La finale de la Coupe d’Afrique des nations U-17 – Maroc 2026, qui opposera ce soir au stade Moulay El-Hassan de Rabat (20h00) le Sénégal à la Tanzanie sera une sorte d’ode à la formation, car elle permettra aux prises deux sélections dont ls performances sont les fruits d’un travail de fond et de longue haleine au sein de leurs fédérations respectives.

Une finale inédite entre le Sénégal, déjà auréolé en 2023 à Alger avec une belle génération emmenée par un certain Lamine Camara, aujourd’hui champion d’Afrique à 22 ans avec les A et partant pour le Mondial 2026, et la grande surprise de cette édition, la Tanzanie représentant du football Est-Africaine.

Les deux sélections ont eu un parcours de qualité, en montant progressivement en puissance à l’image du Sénégal, battu d’entrée par l’Afrique du Sud (1 – 2), s’est vite rattrapé en dominant successivement le Ghana (1 – 0) et l’Algérie (2 – 1), terminant en tête du groupe D.

En quart de finale, les poulains de Seydina Aidara ont dominé les Aiglons du Mali aux tirs au but (1 – 1, 4 à 2) puis le Maroc en demi-finales lors d’une séance encore plus haletante (1 – 1, 7 à 6).

De son côté, la Tanzanie a déroulé lors des deux premiers matchs face au Mozambique et à l’Angola sur le même score (3 – 0), avant de céder face au Mali (1 – 2), terminant tout de même leader du groupe C.

Les coéquipiers de Dismas Athanasi Shida, auteur de 3 buts et l’une des révélations du tournoi, écarteront l’Algérie en quart de finale aux tirs au but (3 – 3, 4 à 3) puis l’Egypte en demi-finale (0 – 0, 4 à 3).

A la lumière de ces résultats, les deux finalistes avancent des arguments solides et des données équilibrées (deux victoires, une défaite et deux qualifications aux tirs au but pour chacune des deux sélections).

Le Sénégal confirme également son statut de l’un des principaux viviers de jeunes talents en Afrique, s’appuyant sur au moins une dizaine d’académies et/ou centres de formation labelisés, alors que la Tanzanie s’est lancée dans un vaste programme de formation et de développement du football en milieu scolaire, ce qui lui a permis de décrocher les deux derniers Championnats d’Afrique de football scolaire (2024 et 2025).

As the countdown to Bafana Bafana’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Mexico edges closer, coach Hugo Broos remains satisfied with his side’s preparations despite travel disruptions caused by visa issues.

Bafana’s departure to Mexico was delayed by a day before the squad eventually left South Africa on Monday afternoon.

The team will set up camp in Pachuca ahead of the eagerly anticipated clash against the hosts on June 11 at Mexico City Stadium.

‘Those problems are behind us’

Despite travelling to North America without assistant coach Helman Mkhalele, who had still not received his visa when the team departed from OR Tambo International Airport, Broos remained upbeat about the challenge ahead.

“The past days have been a little bit stressful with all the problems we had but again, those problems are behind us and now we’re focused on what’s coming,” he said.

Before turning their attention to El Tri, as Mexico are affectionately known, Bafana first have a warm-up fixture against Jamaica on Friday.

The Belgian tactician welcomed the quality of opposition as his side fine-tunes preparations for the tournament opener. Jamaica missed out of world cup qualification after losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the playoff round

“That is something we needed, and we played last week against Nicaragua but the time between that game and the first game against Mexico was too long,” Broos added.

“So, I’m happy with Jamaica because they are 71st on the rankings so they will be a good opponent, and they will be the last test before the opening game.

“I have something in my head, and I will see if we can use it in the first game against Mexico. Jamaica 71st on the rankings so that means they are a little bit lower than us so it will be a good opponent.”

Broos issues update on Modiba

Broos also confirmed that star defender Aubrey Modiba will miss the international friendly against Jamaica as a precaution.

Modiba suffered what appeared to be a hamstring injury during the first leg of the CAF Champions League final while turning out for Mamelodi Sundowns against AS FAR last month.

“I think Aubrey is very close to training with the group if everything goes well with him,” Broos concluded.

“I expect him maybe not for the game against Jamaica. We will not take any risks with him but I’m sure that he will be there for the opening game.”

Following the encounter against Mexico, Bafana will face the Czech Republic in Atlanta on June 18 before returning to Mexico to conclude their Group A campaign against South Korea in Guadalupe.
