Smart glasses have an understandably bad reputation at the moment, but the newly unveiled Viture Pro 2 XR glasses aren't for recording strangers in the street with hidden cameras. They're more like a stylish VR headset built into a pair of sunglasses, specifically for projecting a small, private gaming display in your line of sight.

Viture has launched the new $299.99 glasses, which the brand boasts are the "lightest, thinnest, and most eye-comfort-focused" model yet to celebrate their fifth anniversary. The glasses weigh just 63g, which is 15g lighter than the brand's One XR glasses I have hidden away in my office, and unlike that older pair, the Pro 2 is available alongside a $99 Mobile Dock Mini to introduce compatibility with the Nintendo Switch 2.

XR glasses are very niche. Unlike the best Nintendo Switch 2 accessories, these pricey peripherals aren't something I'd insist everyone add to their setups. If you have a Nintendo Switch 2, I assume you already have a TV or gaming monitor to use alongside it, and the privilege of having a private screen only you can see isn't going to benefit everyone. Yet, I'm glad to see a new 'budget' pair available that's compatible with Nintendo's newest machine. I use the term 'budget' pretty liberally here, as while it's more affordable than the older Pro Pair, I can't pretend $299 isn't a lot to pay for an accessory like this, particularly when it costs almost as much as the Switch 2 does - or as much as a Meta Quest 3S before its recent price hike.

Like the rest of the XR glasses on the market, the frames project a Sony Micro-OLED display before the wearer's eyes. This Viture Pro 2 is equipped with a display with 1,600 nits as opposed to the 1,000 nits of the older Pro model, and utilizes the brand's new UltraClarity 3.0 tech to help increase image sharpness.

Using my older Viture One XR glasses to play my Steam Deck or watch movies in bed so I don't wake up my partner with the handheld's bright screen is something he very much appreciated, and so I'd be intrigued to see how this pair handles the Switch 2. Especially when my older pair could be a bit of a battery drain. According to the Viture Pro 2 press release (via PR News Wire), the included Mobile Dock is powered by a 10,000 mAh battery, which is enough to keep the handheld (and the glasses) juiced up simultaneously, which is a nice bit of reassurance.

The Mobile Dock comes packaged with a detachable adapter and a magnetic mount, which are designed to attach to the back of the console. It's worth noting that while the glasses are compatible with a range of USB-C devices from the get-go, it's this dock that opens it up to Switch 2 players, as it's a battery and USB-C hub in one. Basically, if you were in the market for the Pro 2 glasses, you'll have to grab this extra (or the older Viture Mobile Dock) to carry on creating your ridiculous Pokemon Pokopia builds at 3 a.m. without waking up your sleeping fiancée in bed beside you.

The mini dock alone costs $99, which does drive up the cost of the brand's cheapest frames to $398 in total. However, if you grab them straight from the Viture online store, you can get a $20 discount, taking your total down to $378 instead. That dock might take a little longer to arrive at your door, though, as the website states it's currently on backorder and is expected to ship this September. At least in the meantime, you could still use the glasses to watch movies at your own discretion before getting your Pokopia or Mario Kart World on.

Without testing these for myself quite yet, I can't comment on the image quality and whether it'll be significantly better than your current setup. But if you were in the market for a pair of glasses, this option is now available to you, and at a price that's cheaper than the brand's previous releases, so long as you pick them up in time.
