Former Russian biathlete Galina Koukleva, Olympic gold medalist in sprint at the 1998 Nagano Games, has passed away at age 53. The Russian Biathlon Federation confirmed the news, noting that Koukleva will be remembered for inspiring future generations of Russian biathletes.

Koukleva also won Olympic silver in relay in 1998 and bronze in relay in 2002. She was a three-time world champion in relay and individually claimed silver in mass start at the 2000 World Championships in Oslo, only narrowly defeated by Norwegian rival Liv Grete Skjelbreid.
