High School Roundup: Unatego/Franklin, Delaware Academy make MAC boys basketball finals

OTEGO — Xander Johnson scored a game-high 24 points as top-seeded Unatego/Franklin got a big win over No. 4 Oxford Academy in a Midstate Athletic Conference boys basketball playoff game, 78-48, on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

The Spartan-Devils started the game on a 10-2 run, led after one quarter, 24-8, and at halftime, 44-23.

Rashad Kiel scored 16 points for U/F, which also got seven points from Tristan Fairbairn and six points each from Brock Birdsall, Joe Sargent and Tyler Zachow.

Gordon Smith scored 12 points for the Blackhawks, which also got 10 points from Richard Hunter and eight points from Nic Dodzweit.

Unatego/Franklin (15-4) will play No. 2 seeded Delaware Academy in the MAC finals at 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 21, at Greene Central School.

Oxford Academy (11-8) will play No. 3 seed Walton/Downsville in a consolation game Thursday, Feb. 19, at a site to be determined.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Oxford Academy 45, Unatego 43

Raine Rovente’s turn-around jumper with about two minutes left gave Oxford Academy, the sixth seed, an upset win over No. 5 seeded Unatego in a Midstate Athletic Conference playoff game Tuesday in Otego.

Harly Birdsall’s potential game-tying jumper at the buzzer was waved off by officials as being too late.

Rovente’s basket put the Blackhawks up 44-43 with 1:57 left in the game.

Both teams had turnovers in the final minutes.

Jennavieve Denz went 1-for-2 from the foul line with 2.3 seconds left for the final margin.

The Spartans had a small lead for most of the game, led after one quarter, 14-10, and at halftime, 24-20. Rovente made last-second baskets in both quarters to keep her team close.

The Blackhawks took the lead in the third quarter, 27-26, on a basket by Denz. However, Unatego went on a 10-3 run to close the quarter. Birdsall’s layup with 4.5 seconds left in the quarter made it 36-30.

Unatego led midway through the fourth, 43-38, on a long two-point basket from the left corner by Gracie Tilt, but Oxford scored the final seven points of the game, holding the Spartans scoreless for the final four minutes.

Rovente scored 13 points to lead the Blackhawks, which also got 10 points from Paige Rickard, eight points from Margaret Rovente and seven points from Denz.

Raelynn Parks scored 19 points to lead the Spartans, which also got 14 points from Birdsall.

Unatego (11-9) and Oxford Academy (13-7) await Section IV seedings.

Delaware Academy 55, Walton/Downsville 38

Levi Sheppard scored a team-high 12 points as No. 2 seed Delaware Academy beat No. 3 Walton/Downsville in a Midstate Athletic Conference playoff game Tuesday in Delhi.

The Bulldogs led after one quarter, 18-6, and at halftime, 33-15.

Tyler Reed scored nine points to lead W/D, which also got seven points from Landen Reed.

Lucas Nealis scored 10 points for the Bulldogs, which also got eight points, seven rebounds and five steals from Ben Schnabel.

Delaware Academy (16-3) plays top-seeded Unatego/Franklin in the MAC title game Saturday in Greene.

U/F beat the Bulldogs, 45-38, during a regular-season game in Otego on Dec. 12.

Sidney 70, Deposit/Hancock 57

Grady Loeffler scored a team-high 19 points as No. 5 seeded Sidney won a Midstate Athletic Conference playoff game Tuesday over visiting D/H, the eight seed.

Micah Simmons scored 26 points and had 23 rebounds for D/H, which also got 14 points from Greyson Thomas.

Ayden O’Connor scored 19 points for Sidney.

Deposit/Hancock (4-15) plays No. 7 Afton/Harpursville in a MAC game Thursday.

Sidney (7-11) plays No. 6 seeded Bainbridge-Guilford in a MAC game Thursday.

Schenevus 70, Brookfield 69

Ethan Reed scored a team-high 21 points as host Schenevus won a make-up game against Brookfield on Tuesday in a consolation-game from the Edmeston Christmas Tournament.

Lucien Kortekaas scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds for the Dragons, which also got eight points from Allen Osborne.

Schenevus (13-6) awaits its seeding in the Section IV Class D tournament.

Bainbridge-Guilford 66, Afton/Harpursville 53

Aidan Haynes scored a team-high 15 points as No. 6 seed B-G topped No. 7 A/H in a Midstate Athletic Conference game Tuesday in Bainbridge.

Jacob Rueffer scored 24 points for A/H, which also got 20 points from Jayden Deleon.

Isaiah Hampton scored 13 points for the Bobcats, which also got 12 points from Colin Dailey.

Afton/Harpursville (7-11) plays D/H on Thursday.

Bainbridge-Guilford (7-12) plays Sidney on Thursday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sidney 68, Walton/Downsville 58

Nayla Miley scored a game-high 24 points as No. 4 seeded Sidney beat No. 3 Walton/Downsville in a Midstate Athletic Conference playoff game Tuesday in Walton.

Grace Walley scored 21 points and had 13 rebounds and eight assists for W/D, which also got 11 points from Avery Howard and 10 points from Alivia Conklin.

Bella Conroy scored 17 points for Sidney, which also got 15 points from Chloe van der Sommen.

Sidney (10-8) and Walton/Downsville (14-6) await their Section IV playoff seedings.

Harpursville 57, Otselic Valley 13

Gabby Pawela scored a game-high 27 points as Harpursville won a non-league game at home Tuesday.

Adriana Hartman scored nine points for Harpursville (9-11), which awaits its Section IV playoff seeding.
