Newcastle v Man City again! What is the all-time most played cup tie?

When Joe Cole and Karen Carney paired Newcastle United and Manchester City together during Monday night's FA Cup fifth round draw, there was a sense of déjà vu for supporters of both clubs.

This is the fifth time this decade the two sides have been drawn to face each other in domestic cup competitions, making it the most common tie of the 2020s – and one that usually sees City come out on top.

The Magpies' 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy came to an end when they lifted last season's EFL Cup, but their defence fell at the semi-final stage this year when City swatted them aside 5-1 on aggregate over two legs.

Pep Guardiola's side, meanwhile, have reached three consecutive FA Cup finals. They were the holders when they beat Newcastle en route to the 2024 decider but have now suffered two successive defeats in the showpiece event.

With such frequent cup clashes on top of the usual Premier League meetings - the next of which is at the Etihad Stadium this Saturday - it begs the question; are their fans bored of each other? Freddie Pye, BBC Sport's Manchester City fan writer, doesn't think so.

"I feel as though perhaps because there's a different feeling around such games compared to the Premier League scheduling that they feel slightly more unique, in a way," says Freddie.

"There's also an element of surprise with these fixtures though, and with Newcastle now being able to put up a really stern test and the true threat of knocking us out of cup competition, it usually makes for a nice encounter."

His Newcastle counterpart, Charlotte Robson, isn't so sure. "We joked in all our group chats that after comprehensively beating Aston Villa, we'd end up with Manchester City away in the FA Cup," she reveals.

"It was just supposed to be a joke, not a premonition. I rang my dad's house just after the draw was announced and heard wailing in the background. Here we go again."

Overall, this is the 17th time the two clubs have been drawn together, meaning they still have some way to go to match England's most common cup tie; Arsenal versus Liverpool, who have thrashed it out 27 times.
