Canada’s Homan gets back in win column with big win over China at Olympics

An off-day seemed to help Canada’s Team Rachel Homan reset and get back to its winning ways.

Canada controlled the whole game against China’s Team Wang Rui to earn a 10-5 victory on Monday, improving its record to 2-3. The win also snapped a three-game losing streak.

This game was never in doubt for the Canadians, even when they trailed 2-0 after three ends. Even though the scoreboard wasn’t in their favour at that point, the whole team had a different vibe.

Their communication and attitude was key. From the beginning, the mood was much lighter for Homan and her teammates, they had more confidence in the ice and never got down on one another.

It led to big ends for Canada. Homan scored nine of her 10 points in just three ends with hammer.

As a team, Canada outcurled China 87-81 per cent.

Elsewhere in Draw 7, Sweden stayed undefeated (6-0) with a big 6-4 win over Switzerland while Great Britain crushed Denmark 7-2. Both results help Homan’s playoff chances — she currently is one game out of the fourth and final playoff spot in the 10-team round-robin.

Canada will be on the ice twice more Monday — first with Brad Jacobs, who will look to beat Czechia’s Lukas Klima and improve to 5-1 at 8:05 a.m. ET / 5:05 a.m. PT (CBC Gem, Sportsnet+)

Homan will try to win her second game of the day and get back to a .500 record at 1:05 p.m. ET / 10:05 a.m. PT (CBC Gem, Sportsnet+) against Japan’s Sayaka Yoshimura.
