Amid the recruiting dead period, Texas A&M coach Mike Elko is taking advantage of his brief time off before the spring season begins next month, but, as we know, recruiting never stops, and one of the Aggies' top recruiting targets in the 2027 cycle, five-star cornerback John Meredith, is reportedly inching closer to his commitment date.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that, after his recent visit to Alabama, the Crimson Tide is now Texas A&M's primary competitor, and after Elko elevated Bryant Gross-Armiento as the program's new cornerbacks coach, AggieYell insider Jaxson Callaway confirmed that the Aggies have only strengthened their chances of landing the blue-chip defensive back.
Former defensive backs coach and ace recruiter Jordan Peterson's departure for Kansas State to join former offensive coordinator Collin Klein as the Wildcat's defensive coordinator has reportedly not affected Meredith's standing with Texas A&M, providing a quote to Jaxson Callaway this weekend:
“It’s definitely good. We were already really close before he got the job, so it helps that nothing really changes there at all for me.”
Similar to freshman cornerback Brandon Arrington, who praised Bryant Gross-Armiente after his promotion, it's clear that Elko made the right decision, which should pay off from a recruiting and development standpoint.
With an official visit in the works, Callaway confirms that a spring decision, which could be extended as late as July, remains the plan for John Meredith. Even if he commits to Texas A&M, Alabama will still have plenty of time to flip his commitment, placing pressure on the Aggies coaching staff to keep him in the fold until Early Signing Day, eight months to ten months from now.
